The visual rendering is done by Phaser. I have a working version using Pixi as well, but went with Phaser for arbitrary reasons. https://phaser.io/ https://pixijs.com/

Well, technically, Unity Web is JS + WebGL. But yeah, tools like Phaser could use more developers.

Building a Roguelike Game with TypeScript

So I'm still decided to learn Unity and do a project with it. However, my C# knowledge is close to nil 😛. I've known about Phaser for a few years now, and stayed away from it for multiple reasons, the main one being that there really isn't a big community, compared to other engines like Unity or Godot. But currently, it's almost fully compatible with Typescript, which in my head, is acting like a stepping stone to C#. So I went it it.

Is it a waste of time learning OpenGL for a toy project?

You could use instead SFML. The alternative is having to learn how to do that using an specific OS.

There are such librarys, in college we used SFML as the library. Its basically a canvas library, and thus works well.

For C++ 2D games I recommend looking into SFML. It handles graphics, sound and input. They also have good basic tutorials on their page.

Making a game in C++

I'll trust you've had experience in these things, the only thing I'd point out is that SFML is now implementing a keyboard scancode featurereddit.com/r/gamedev | 2021-09-22
The funny thing about is that I developed scancode support for SMFL on Linux 3 years ago, but it's still not merged into master, because all the platforms need to be finished and fully tested. With SFML being not a very popular library, it moves at an incredibly slow pace.
Baby Steps for a beginner? Mistakes to avoid?
reddit.com/r/gamedev | 2021-09-17
I've used SFML for some c++ practice. It offers a window, some event handling, and 2D rendering (sprite drawing). It's a good example of what I mean when I say "limited environment".
Should I make a small game engine?
reddit.com/r/cpp_questions | 2021-09-13
SDL2 has been mentioned which is excellent, and you could have a look at SFML which has similar features but it's C++ instead of C.
