As per many other comments, it sounds like a static site generator like Hugo (https://gohugo.io/) or Jekyll (https://jekyllrb.com/), hosted on GitHub Pages (https://pages.github.com/) or GitLab Pages (https://about.gitlab.com/stages-devops-lifecycle/pages/), would be a good match. If you set up GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD to do the build and deploy (see e.g. https://gohugo.io/hosting-and-deployment/hosting-on-github/), your normal workflow will simply be to edit markdown and do a git push to make your changes live. There are a number of pre-built themes (e.g. https://themes.gohugo.io/) you can use, and these are realtively straightforward to tweak to your requirements.

Once you have all the documentation worked out a place to host it will be necessary. Some documentation generation may have ties in with specific hosting sites. Read The Docs' support for Sphinx and other documentation tools is one example. GitHub pages can be useful for GitHub hosted projects as it integrates well with GitHub Actions CI/CD deployments.

There are plenty of other hosting options you could use instead, such as GitHub Pages.

Functionally github.io just presents whatever you throw into the repository as the root directory of a site, github themselves host a very good, basic outline of how to set up a site on github.io.

For building the project, I used GitHub Actions; for hosting, GitHub Pages. GitHub provides 2000 free build minutes per month, which is more than enough for me. The logic is:

I think this is what you're looking for: https://www.npmjs.com/package/gh-pages and then scroll towards the bottom, and you can set it up to run using a script in your package.json file using npm run deploy

Generate App: this action aims to build and copy the React web application inside your repository and publish it using gh-pages NPM tool.

It will create a branch named gh-pages and (after a few steps that I’ll go through in the next section) automatically update that branch with new files whenever you run npm run deploy. If you want the details on everything going on behind the scenes here, check out the gh-pages docs.

There are some NPM packages, such as gh-pages to make it easy to publish, so check it out after reviewing pages.github.com

The gh-pages npm package, makes for quick and easy deployment of fully compiled react applications.

When I was building out the frontend there were a couple of issues that I ran into, mostly because I was hosting this on gh-pages.

Since you're using yarn I could recommend the gh-pages package that makes it very easy to build and deploy your work to Github Pages. It makes a deployed version of your work. Best of luck!

For my private mini-projects, I prefer to use Parcel bundler over Create React App just because there is less overhead and clutter to clean up.
