Check out OwnTone former daap, https://github.com/owntone/owntone-server it simply browses the dir, can play playlists but will do just folder(s) play too. As a bonus it can airplay/cast.

Multiroom Audio with Chromecast mixed in
If you're on Linux, you can use pulseaudio-dlna to send audio to Chromecasts. From there, you can point a snapcast client to the Chromecast audio device.
- Chromecast has always been a pain in the ass & now doesn't work with VLC at all
