  • Resources for the /r/Zen Translator

Zhongwen Chinese Popup Dictionary -- link -- An extension for Chrome (and possibly other browsers) that allows you to lookup the definition of single characters, bigrams, and set-phrases/idioms simply by hovering over the text with your cursor. Particularly useful for quick spot-checking and getting the gist of a particular passage. A limitation of this tool is that it is designed for use with modern, standardized Chinese texts not the literary Chinese of Zen texts alongwith their occasional variant characters, and Sanskrit-Chinese transliterations.
  • Structured Study Guide for Native English Speaker?
    1 project | /r/ChineseLanguage | 10 Oct 2023
I'm not someone who likes to just sit and stare at a textbook to learn so I found just practicing as much as possible was the best way for me to learn. I do think you should make notes of stuff to help you remember but speaking as much as possible is the best way to become proficient. ings like food, colors, animals, etc. and use them in conversation. An example of this would be "I want to eat 面条(noodles)." I would also start reading simple novels, comics, or watching shows to pick up on sentence structure. There are some great Chrome extensions if you use Google Chrome to read or watch shows. I use Language Reactor for video and Zhongwen for text. Then you can practice simple sentences with your wife like saying "我想吃面条".
  • About HSK4 level and I feel utterly discouraged when it comes to listening and understanding

Also, check out graded readers, particularly in the Pleco app, since the more you the read, the more it will help you process subtitles quicker and match meaning and sound. For a free start, check out the "Chinese Voices Project" for some easy texts to listen along to repeatedly, which you can use a pop-up dictionary browser plugin like Zhongwen (also available for Firefox). You can take the ones you've listened to alongside text and understood and then play them repeatedly without looking at the text.
  • Cantonese Font with Pronunciation
    4 projects | news.ycombinator.com | 8 May 2023
This is pretty good for someone who can speak Cantonese but can't read/write it.

As an example, I speak Mandarin and can't read/write (much) Chinese characters as I spoke it at home while growing up in Australia. So, I can imagine there'd be quite a lot who are in a similar situation to me but with Cantonese who would benefit from this (not just as a learning tool).

I've been using the Zhongwen[0] browser extension to "read" websites that have Chinese characters for many years as hovering over Chinese characters will display a popup with the pronunciation ping yin. It may not be the speediest way of understanding a block of Chinese text.

I could imagine someone creating a browser extension that would replace the font used on the website(s) with the Cantonese Visual Font when the extension is enabled.

  • How in the world do you get to native-level texts?

There's also the Yabla Dictionary I occasionally use, and if you use Chrome maybe an extension like this would help if you go on a Chinese wiki and want to get immediate definitions.

Read short stories from sites like https://www.xigushi.com . Use a browser popup dictionary to understand new words, for instance, the Zhongwen Chrome extension.

  • Blazing fast Chinese learning with Bilibili.
    2 projects | /r/ChineseLanguage | 22 Jul 2022
For people who learn the Chinese language through enjoying the Bilibili video sharing platform from China, this is a big news. I made a user script (similar to a Chrome extension) that works on Bilibili danmu comments, the comments you see on the videos moving from right to left. This script, Bilibili selectable danmu comments, basically does enable the danmu comments selectable with your mouse, so you can use Google translate or Zhongwen on it.
