There are on device or even in browser renderers that only need remote or locally stored vector data to render the map. This moves the burde of rendering to user devices that should be more than capable for this today (especially if you use a GPU renderer) and makes you server into just a dumb data pipe that should be able to scale much better & more cheaply.

One such renderer available via Qt/QML:

    https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/location-plugin-mapboxgl.html

Alternatively you can have a local daemon running that does the tile rendering on your device from offline data packs. This way even "legacy" apps requiring simple bitmap tiles will work without (major) changes. One such project providing this (among other APIs) is OSM Scout Server:

    https://github.com/rinigus/osmscout-server

There is the OSM Scout Server project, that makes it possible to download various OSM based data packs for offline use:

    https://github.com/rinigus/osmscout-server

Then it provides various services (routing, PoI search, geocoding, etc.) over this data set to all applications running locally on your machine. It targets mainly various mobile Linux distros but works perfectly fine on desktop as well and is available in flatpak form.

Like this all navigation and mapping can share the same data set and no potentially sensitive location related metadata is leaked to a remote server other than what data packs have been initially downloaded.

Also the community run infrastructure just needs to be able to store and store and distribute the ~150 GB of data packs covering Earth but does not need to have any extensive compute and memory requirements to handle lots expensive of individual API queries.

I used to use Guake for a long time, then when I was looking for an alternative with less dependencies, I found Tilda (https://github.com/lanoxx/tilda), which is very similar.

Tilda is the only one I know for Linux, but I have never heard of any for windows. I mean, in general there are not really that many terminals for windows - if you are talking about Microsoft Windows?

Yeah I'm still using Xorg, and will probably stick with Xorg until I find a Wayland-compatible dropdown terminal I like as much as Tilda.

I haven't seen anyone mention it, but a fantastic terminal i recommend you guys should give a try is Tilda. It's a drop down terminal and is so much fun to use if you spend a lot of time in the terminal.

There are many terminal emulators, for throughput, predictable behavior with modern features, quake style, theming, tabs, and much more. Most of the features you need are supported by urxvt, and if it's not, there's sure to be another non-electron terminal emulator that has exactly what you need.

A little terminal knowledge will take you a long way. It's often the most efficient way to accomplish a simple task, for instance. I keep a terminal open all the time (I like the pop-down terminal Tilda a lot; it's my go-to for every quick terminal task) and use it constantly: say, if I need to auto-rotate all of the JPEG files, but no others, in the directory of photos I've just unloaded from my camera, but want to ignore all of the other files. Rather than opening a file manager window, sorting by file type, scrolling around to find the first JPEG file, clicking on it, and then scrolling around to find the last JPEG file, shift-clicking on that, and then right-clicking on one and sending them all to a script or a program of some kind, I just pop down Tilda and type exiftran -aigp *JPG, and let it run. The time saved by being able to automate simple tasks, and to perform them on files based on shell wildcard patterns instead of with the mouse, adds up when you're doing it even a few times a day.
