Highly recommend the Stylus Extension, which has a lot of user-created themes that improve sites. This one does pretty well to make Fandom sites usable (although it has issues with colors that make some pages/links absolutely unreadable, but that's a matter of wiki style clashing with user style).

I still remember the time when user styles were a first class feature built into all browsers. Hell, that 'C' in CSS, "Cascading", was always there to allow styles to enhance/override prior styles, including - at the top-level - to allow the user to override website's styling. Back before web designers ruined everything by making every web page into its own special snowflake, people thought users would have one-two default CSS sheets to choose from and apply to any webpage, the way we today think about "dark mode".

These days, we have to resort to using browser extensions. A well-known one is Stylus [0][1]. In a way, it's much better than old built-in user styles. But then, it's not built in.

[1] - Mind the name, it's "Stylus", not "Stylish" - the latter used to be popular, but then it sold out and become another peace of surveillance capitalism detritus. Stylus is a GPLv3 fork of Stylish with data collection removed.

  • Yeah, I might get the hang of removing the focus rings on edge now but where should I input the code and is there any additional codes I should 'inject' as well?

Stylus add-on for Chrome works fine in Edge. Set that as a global style.

What about using Stylus on Firefox https://add0n.com/stylus.html ?
  • Does anyone know how to change this back to the old icon? This one is super distracting, and I honestly find it quite ugly.
    reddit.com/r/youtube | 2021-07-22
if you use pc or laptop you can add a styleseet for youtube, use this extension called stylus - https://add0n.com/stylus.html (it's open source) , then you can add custom css , so you them make a style sheet for youtube.com and add this css .ytp-doubletap-static-circle { display: none !important; } this will hide the circle.

  • I thought this was interesting - it's a browser extension for autistic people
If anyone does not want to use this particular extension, please see below for extensions that will achieve the same functions, plus a few extras I find useful as an autistic individual with ADHD and auditory processing issues. Furthermore, all extensions I list are safe and open source. - Dark reader: this extension enables dark mode for all websites, which I personally find invaluable for light sensitivity. You can change the contrast (ie. greys/blacks) and set fonts so they are mostly consistent across websites. It also has other features like greyscale mode and you can change all these settings for individual sites or globally across all sites. https://darkreader.org/ - Ublock Origin: this is an adblocker. I suggest this adblocker over other open source options like Adblock Plus as other extensions are known to sell themselves out (ie. ad providers can pay them money to not block their content). Ublock origin does not do this. It may look complex (ie has lots of options, however if you install it, it will block ads straight away without you needing to configure anything. - Video speed controller: this adds an option to any HTML5 video in the top left to slow down or speed up. It is invaluable for listening faster when you have trouble paying attention, or slower if you're having trouble with comprehension. You can find links to the chrome and firefox extensions in the readme description on the github page. https://github.com/codebicycle/videospeed - Other: - Blocking video autoplay: you shouldn't need an extension for this. Look in the preferences in your browser and it should be an option somewhere in there. For firefox: about:preferences#privacy; Chrome: chrome://settings/content. - Blocking popups: I would also set your browser settings to not automatically launch popups in the settings. - Subtitles: I usually use subtitles, unfortunately much content isn't subbed. YouTube now has half decent automatic subtitles. You can enable in your youtube account settings to automatically have subtitles enabled on videos you watch. Alternatively, press c on your keyboard to toggle subtitles.
