Self Hosting a Google Maps Alternative with OpenStreetMap
Author here: the docker project for the tile server allows setting up automatic syncing fairly easily:
https://github.com/Overv/openstreetmap-tile-server#enabling-...
I'm not sure about Nominatim or Valhalla's ability to auto-sync the latest changes, at least with the dockerized version, but it may be possible.

Maps.earth β free and open-source web maps
We're in the same boat using Mapbox, we've been debating leaving for the OpenStreetMaps container since we only use them for static images and map display. https://github.com/Overv/openstreetmap-tile-server
Our bill last year was $80k and honestly its right on the cusp of being worth the effort to switch.

Show HN: Self-Hosted Maps Stack
My friend Alexander created an easy docker file[1] for an OSM tile server. I use it for nearly two years without problems.

Offline Map Tiles
Finally: https://github.com/Overv/openstreetmap-tile-server I haven't tried this one before, but it seems kind of cool, and seems to be what you're looking for?

[OC] Interactive Heatmap of Traffic Accidents Reported by the Missouri State Highway Patrol
I don't need to serve the whole country, but it's nice to have a little more than just Missouri, so I was pleased to find Protomaps. There are several other extract repositories, but this was the only one I found that let me define and export a custom region. For the actual generation and rendering of the tiles, it seemed easiest to use this existing docker project.

Why Openstreetmap as a product fails to compete with Google Maps β part 1/3
I think an easy to setup self-hosted vector/tile server could help increase adoption. I'am currently looking into replacing Mapbox with a self hosted solution. My last attempt ran out of disk space building the docker images (with european maps) from https://github.com/Overv/openstreetmap-tile-server. Haven't found the time to setup a larger VPS but this looks like a great project to get started.

Protomaps β A free and open source map of the world
(.shp .gpkg ...) | ogr2ogr -> .geojson | tippecanoe -> .pmtiles
for OpenStreetMap data there's planetiler[4], and and openmaptiles[5] styles that work with Maplibre
with those combinations you've got a great start to something you can host for pennies on AWS S3+CloudFront or Cloudflare R2, with an open source data pipeline

Use 3D map library with API key function of Amazon Location Service
When using the Amazon Location Service, I recommend MapLibre GL JS, which I introduced in my previous article, "Amazon Location Service and AWS Amplify to Use Various Map Library," but you can also use any map library you like, including iTowns this time. I hope you will choose the map library of your choice, including iTowns!

Using Lidar to map tree shadows
Your browser has a very powerful image decoder built into it, offloading the PNG decoding into Javascript is very resource hungry.
Using maplibre (or any map viewer) you can load blobs of image data out of a tiff and use `Image` or `Canvas` to render the data onto a map.
Its even easier if the tiffs are already Cloud optimized as they perfectly align to a 1-to-1 map tile and they don't need to be rescaled, you can then just render the images onto the map. eg here is a viewer that loads webps out of a 15GB tiff and uses Canvas to render them onto a map [1]
Unless you are trying to layer all your maps together, you also could stop reprojecting them into webmercator, or if your goal is to layer them, then storing them in webmercator would save a ton of user's compute time.
There are a bunch of us that talk web maping and imagery in the #maplibre and #imagery slack channels in OSMUS's slack [2]
