Upgrading from Audacity
The only thing it is missing natively which Audacity had built-in is background noise filtering; but that is easily accomplished with a plugin such as Lucian Dato's Noise Repellent.

I use mpd from https://www.musicpd.org/. I run it on my linux router, which has head phone jack and connect to a pair of speakers, and can control either from my desktop or my phone.

Just discovered MPV works over SSH. I no longer need bluetooth to connect my laptop to the stereo.
You could also run MPD on the desktop, and then control it via any number of client apps, even from your smartphone.
