Gopher Protocol (2020)
Here's also a read-only NNTP/Usenet bridge for HN you can self-host https://github.com/epilys/nntpserver.py/blob/main/examples/h...

Show HN: Circumflex, browse HN in your terminal
Here's a single file, no dependency nntp / Usenet server library in python3 I wrote. It includes an HN gateway as an example. I have used it with slrn (tui), meli (tui), pan (gui) and thunderbird (gui)

Ask HN: I miss Usenet. Are there any modern equivalents?
I wrote a dependency tree python3 library to make your own NNTP servers:
https://pypi.org/project/nntpserver/0.0.3/
https://github.com/epilys/nntpserver.py
It's used in my link aggregator forum, https://sic.pm/ which also has a mailing list bridge functionality.
As a demo, I have implemented a HN mirror on NNTP: (quoting README.md)
hnnntp.py querying news.ycombinator.com (hackernews) API and caching results in an sqlite3 database. A public instance might be online at nessuent.xyz:564 (TLS only)

Ask HN: I miss Usenet. Are there any modern equivalents?
Older versions of reddit were open-source, like the one that was forked to power https://saidit.net/ . That might be a possible starting point, but I bet there are other projects out there too

Just got a warning message from a reddit admin saying that this subreddit is spreading hate
I have a few suggestions, there is SaidIt that has been great so far (IMO), it has been thought for freedom of expression, so it is like reddit but with a different vote system.
There’s Saidit, maybe some others out there too

What are some unsaid rules of Reddit that the new users should be aware of?
They should get rid of the downvote button. It is too easily abused especially when comments gets collapsed after more than 4 downvotes. It leads too much into censorship, group think and circle-jerks. Saidit.net has the same basic interface as reddit without the downvote button and it is a much more free speech centered site, it just needs more users to diversify and increase the community interaction.
- I'm coding up a backup forum in case of Reddit fuckery and such. It's about bout 75% done. DM me if you'd like to help in any way. This is for apes by apes!

Why reddit?
Reddit, for the record, used to be free software four years ago, then the frontend was reimplemented. At least there is an active fork but the site that hosts it is less than stellar in terms of moderation.
What are some alternatives?
