Best way to host a small forum?
Excellent! Glad we could get you sorted! Hosting can be scary and it's okay to be afraid to touch things or not understand certain settings or terms. Especially if you're new. The key is to read the documentation. For your forum needs, this can be found at https://mybb.com and https://phpbb.com

PhpBB
I actually recommend myBB [0] over phpBB for anyone looking to set up a LAMP forum. It's cleaner, better written, and possibly better maintained and with a much less scary vulnerability history. I believe it started off as an attempt to create an OSS version of IPB (or was it vB?).

Would anyone be interested in joining a forum alongside this subreddit and discord server?
I'm thinking about diversifying how users can access CodingHelp by opening a forum. Either ran with MyBB, phpBB or XenForo (XF). This is something I would add in 2022 as I haven't even started looking into the 3 software platforms I would choose from. I know the differences from past experiences, but I haven't used them in years.

Ask HN: Forum Software Similar to Reddit?
I have not tried this one, but Postmill [1] is similar to HN and phpBB [2] is an off the shelf forum platform with incredible moderator capabilities but I think an add-on is required for voting.

Just remember forums exist
phpBB: https://www.phpbb.com/ - free & open source. Seems very customizable. Used by VLC https://forum.videolan.org/ - I like it but I don't see tags/flair.

Building a forum with React, NodeJS
I know, there are no forums today like before, it's all about the Reddit, Facebook communities (and smaller ones like Devto and Mastodon), but! Once upon a time, when I was a boy, I was addicted to forums, I have actually created a few with PHPBB and vBulletin, back when PHP was a thing. being so nostalgic made me write this blog post 😎

A First Look at Hanami 2 for Ruby
I have had a test Hanami application since the beta 1 release. It is a plain old server-rendered discussion forum - think something like phpBB. The app checks how much effort it takes to add common features to a Hanami application, such as user authentication, file uploads, etc.
