What are the best apps you've been using for a long time on Windows?
Mozilla Firefox (portable) - web browser (tabs, extensions, bookmarks, zoom, incognito, PIP...)

What is causing videos to be unplayable in Firefox but not in my media player?
Try to install Firefox directly from https://www.mozilla.org you can download it there for Linux, extract it into your home directory and run it from there. That version should be able to play videos, but it will do with software decoding so depending on your hardware, you might not be able to play 4k videos without lags or framedrops.

Dangerous Google Ad Disguising Itself as www.gimp.org
As an IT professional making recommendations to friends and family, I generally point people to Firefox, have them turn on HTTPS-Only Mode, install the open-source uBlock Origin by u/gorhill4 (Raymond Hill) for ad-blocking, and use a password manager like 1Password.

Does anyone else feel a twinge of guilt every time
No, because I type www.mozilla.org into the address bar and don’t use a search unless it’s something I don’t know.

Ask HN: Have you used SQLite as a primary database?
Simon Willison has written about using SQLite for a "Baked in data" architecture which could be a super interesting method for some situations: https://simonwillison.net/2021/Jul/28/baked-data/
As he notes https://www.mozilla.org/ uses this pattern:
> They started using SQLite back in 2018 in a system they call Bedrock ... Their site content lives in a ~22MB SQLite database file, which is built and uploaded to S3 and then downloaded on a regular basis to each of their application servers.
