To ease the migration and management of 2 (and possibly more platforms) I’ve used the following modular approach which I will show here with Mixpanel and PostHog as examples.

I am looking into whether you have experienced any pain points or issues not solved by current analytics platforms. By current solutions I'm talking plausible.io, mixpanel.com, usermaven.com and alike, providing features such as: total visitors, page views, online users, custom events tracking, top sources.

Ten years ago, there was a popular Ask HN: "what's your startup’s analytics setup?” [0]. Like the poster then (malandrew), I have the same problem in 2023: Selecting analytics solutions for the startup I'm working at has proven to be more daunting than I imagined.

There are many services to choose from and it's not immediately obvious how you should choose from the many offerings to get not only complete analytics coverage but also do so in a way where you can integrate them all to get a complete picture without any mismatch.

There is too much marketing speech copy on the sites of many analytics startups to properly evaluate them without wasting time and effort to signup, configure and use each one long enough to understand the value they provide.

Off the top of my head, there are services like Segment [1], Amplitude [2], Mixpanel [3], Trackingplan [4], Avo [5], Posthog [6], Freshpaint [7], etc.

So ten years later, what are the must-have analytics solutions for startups? What are the best tools for bringing in all the data from the different analytics tools? How should Engineering, Product and Data work together around analytics?

The next rung up are User recordings. For users that are having issues, we have concrete recorded data for their flow. The flows would include anything relevant to the application, how they used it, what actions they took. All so we can actually see what happened in context for when there is a problem. No one wants to spend any time looking at recordings if they don't have to. It is also very difficult to identify the root cause of problems by reviewing a recording, but having them is indispensable to your support engineers when they need them, when a user has reported a issue. Solutions include PostHog, FullStory, Sentry. If you don't have these recordings, then the next best alternative (which is very far away) is getting a live screencast from the user. These are less useful, and more expensive to obtain. Worst of all, they can and have been used to breach sensitive systems.

Posthog. Posthog has a lot of sub products but I use it mainly for analytics and session replays. I have to say Posthog is an impressive product. Everything from dev experience to dashboards is just awesome. Great to see GA finally got some real competition. I'm looking forward to try all the other products from them.

We use tools like Posthog to measure how users are using our products. This allows us to see what features are being used and which ones are not.

For product analytics, Posthog is simply the best. The best feature you will find useful is Session Replay (you will actually see how your users use the app).
