Selfhosting services to make life easier for my parents?
If one of them cooks, spin up a mealie instance for them. I made my mom her own after she saw some recipes on mine. And she uses it all the time. Mealie Github

I have to know if anyone does something similar: my wife and I have a list of recipes (we call it “The Book”) in which we put our favorite recipes in. The only rules are that we have to make it ourselves (one of or both of us) and BOTH OF US have to 100% agree that it is good enough to be included.
For some time I've been making use of an open source recipe management tool called Mealie. You can find the code at https://github.com/hay-kot/mealie

Any open source community projects ?
The in my opinion best way is to contribute to software you already use. In my case that's self-hosted stuff like Mealie or Owncast.

Pulling what little hair I have left out trying to get Mealie installed in docker-compose

apps that changed your life
Fixed mealie link: https://github.com/hay-kot/mealie
One I don't see mentioned yet: Mealie recipe manager. With recipes so easy to access (and share), I'm finding myself cooking more often. Healthier than eating out and it's also time/cooking I enjoy with my family.

On unraid postgres is used by szurubooru, mealie, and grafana. I don't know specifically what but I know redis is also used by one of the apps in the cloud group as well.

How do you keep recipes? Is there an app?
so, so late, I always use and recommend recipesage.com, it's just a webpage someone made and maintains, you can bookmark it, use it as an app, at least in android and it's wonderful.

Save your recipes
if you are still not against web-based bookmarking, then I recommend Recipe Sage (https://recipesage.com/). I have emailed the owner with some feedback and he is quite actively involved, I am sure if recipes would be lost from his database he would have a way of retrieving them. The Website is good because you can import the recipe and then alter it however you want, it also has an app. I would say look into it. I have a few cookbooks that I constantly loose around the kitchen and it is so time consuming, not to mention that I sometimes get the wrong measurements written down or I add the ingredients which later I decide no longer go. Sorry you lost a bunch of your old recipes, I know how frustrating that can be.
