framework VS google-webfonts-helper

I'm working on a framework inspired by React/Next.js which turns Haml into Ruby. It's 100% server side, but it runs pretty fast. I'm currently working on a rewrite, I just wish I had more time to work on it.

Mayu, a server side web framework written in Ruby, inspired by React. Been working on it for over a year, and I'm currently doing a complete rewrite now that I have a better idea of how it should work.

Mayu Live[1] has components, it works kinda like React. I have been thinking about making rdom[2] work with Rails but I got a memory leak to fix first. It's possible to do all this in Ruby though.

Thanks, yes mayu.live is a close thing, but I looked at its examples, it's overcomplicated, if done a bit differently, the counter code it shows as example would be 3 times shorter. Nice experiment, same principle as LiveView, but not quite there.

I've been working on a React-inspired framework in Ruby [1,2]. It only requires a few kilobytes of JavaScript, and only includes the relevant stylesheets for each page. Works pretty well and I guess I'm in a rural area (about 90 minutes down the river from Iquitos, Peru) on a 4G connection.

I recently did another experiment [3] where each static DOM tree becomes a custom element, which also reduces the amount of data that needs to be transferred.

I use https://gwfh.mranftl.com/ to grab the fonts and CSS for local use.

If you do want to self-host the fonts, there is a handy Web Fonts helper which generates the CSS and lets you download the .woff2 files you’ll need.

According to the Cloudflare December monthly stats, I had roughly 57k unique users, 15m requests, 1,3TB traffic. Though, most requests are likely to be bots/integrators spamming the API...

Running on a bare metal k8s cluster (libvirt) on top of a single dedicated Hetzner server, ~70€/month. Not going to monetize it, but will maybe accept donations/sponsorings in the future...

Just moved off https://github.com/majodev/google-webfonts-helper today from their free tier to my own private infra and replaced current the Heroku dyno with a 301: https://github.com/kenmickles/heroku-redirect

AFAIK sadly Heroku does not provide some other _free_ permanent redirect option for *.herokuapp.com apps without actually running a dyno there.

As an alternative there is the google-webfonts-helper. It can be used online and regardless of the operating system.

As you can see, the font loading with Google Fonts can be complicated. However, you can reduce how many requests are needed to just one by self-hosting the font and putting the @font-face declaration inside your CSS bundle instead of an external stylesheet. A tool like Google Webfonts Helper can be helpful for this.
