macmediakeyforwarder VS alt-tab-macos

Found this article which suggests Mac Media Key Forwarder or BeardedSpice.

Try this. It works great to tie that key to Apple music. Says it works for Spotify too.

I don't know the exact issues but might be related to the issues why I left Apple : I was developing a very successful little tool for MacOS ( https://github.com/milgra/macmediakeyforwarder ) which listened for keypresses. From 2016 to 2019 it became harder and harder to install it because apple added more and more restrictions to apps like this. By 2019, you had to enable the application explicitly to listen for events at least in three places deep down in the system preferences, click accept in various popups and if you stuck somewhere then nobody could tell why it wasn't working. So I had a very expensive laptop and the OS didn't let me use it freely. So I just switched to freebsd and linux, I don't have fancy productivity apps like photoshop and final cut but with open source tools and with my own desktop applications I created the best looking/most usable desktop experience MacOS will never have. Here you go, I'm on an M1 MacBook Air 2020 and this works perfectly for me. It's called "Mac Media Key Forwarder"

Media Key Forwarder: lets you pause iTunes/Apple Music/Spotify when you hit the pause button. Apple, for unknown insane reasons, changed the pause button to pause front-loaded media instead of background music when I actually want to pause background music because I now want to watch something.

I dislike the way how the media keys work on macOS by default. I used to use this app (https://github.com/milgra/macmediakeyforwarder) with previous versions of macOS, but it's no longer supported and its recommended replacement 'Bearded Spice' doesn't work on my computer. Is there another way to make those media keys work just for the music app?

I use AltTab [0] for this. I find using a mac without it horrendous.

I love cmd+tab on a mac to switch between applications, but I was missing a feature to switch between windows of the same application. Alt+tab solves that in the same manner Windows does.

I know this isn’t the point of your post, but in case it helps your experience in MacOS:

2. The third party app “alt-tab” provides an alt tab experience that is much better than the native one, and is likely more similar to the behavior you expect from Linux. See: https://alt-tab-macos.netlify.app

I also personally like to use Rectangle for window positioning using keyboard shortcuts, tried the various auto tiling solutions like yabai and amethyst in the past but I think the flexibility of Rectangle is worth having to remember and use a few keyboard shortcuts.

I think it’s unfortunate that so many third party apps are required, but with a bit of babysitting MacOS can be pretty decent to work with.

There's likely a delay so that you can use Alt-Tab to quickly go back to your last window without the pop-up showing. I use AltTab on macOS like this, which has a configurable delay.
