MATE & LXQt already have partial Wayland support. Ubuntu MATE team is using Mir to run MATE on Wayland. Upstream LXQt wants to use KWin but a developer already runs LWQt on Mutter. Expect them on Wayland soon. Cinnamon is going to rebase muffin on a newer version of Mutter, which may bring Wayland support with it. With the move to CSDs, Xfce seems to also start work on Wayland support not too far away in the future. While Xorg will continue to thrive, the way to Wayland isn’t that convoluted anymore.

As is plain from this and this, these efforts are in collaboration with upstream.

Some sort of bring-your-own-compositor adventure at the moment, if I'm reading this issue correctly [0].

The thread did mention PaperDE [1] however , which you might want to look at if you're interested in a lightweight Wayland + QT environment.

As the other person said, Docklike and Plank (in the Software center) are readily available.

A couple of distros now bundle the very nifty "docklike" task switcher, which is rather snazzy and integrates well: https://github.com/nsz32/docklike-plugin

Thanks, I was able to replicate the look of Linux Mint by installing Whisker menu and Docklike-plugin.

For the Dock, you can go with something like plank, there's a panel plugin docklike that can replicate what they do, or you can "just" install latte-dock and use it in XFCE. Not perfectly integrated, but actually works.

every update i try gnome, and every time i end up nuking the partition

the UX is oppressive and huge, it feels slow, it feels heavy it's everything i hate about macOS without the things i like about macOS

XFCE is a much better choice, it's the definition of a desktop OS, lightweight and slim, pair it with [1] and you get a windows like experience

I also love the GNOME workflow and so wanted to create a similar thing in XFCE. I use two additions, the docklike-plugin and skippy-xd, both of which are probably in your package manager.
