I joined an OS project called LiveKit (GH repo), a Go-based infrastructure intended to make it easy to embed real-time audio and video communications directly in any app. The world is growing increasingly remote and connected online (esp with COVID), & realtime audio and video is becoming the cornerstone of how we connect and communicate with others around the world.

I had a nightmare setting this up for my streams. I ended up going with rtsp-simple-server as it seems to work a little quicker and is much better documented. There is an option to toggle between always having a stream "live" or stop when there are no viewers

The easiest solution was to setup a wireguard server on a vps, and setting the camera to stream to a rtsp Endpoint handled by https://github.com/aler9/rtsp-simple-server. Then the clients connect to another vpn server and can access the video stream that is republished by the server.
