limelight.vim VS languagetool

F10: Toggles Limelight on or off.

In case you can't find anything that does the same there's https://github.com/junegunn/limelight.vim which could be adapted to give the same effect

This feels real similar in concept to limelight and goyo. Nice! 👍🏻

goyo and limelight are also really useful plugins that work well together to create a nice environment for writing.

It was fun, and the setup is almost identical to iA Writer which I appreciate. I even had it all on my phone with Termux!

Last year I just did it in Markdown in VSCode in "zen mode" which also worked pretty well. It was definitely easier to setup than Vim and had better highlighting of bold/italics/etc.

I can recommend Goyo and limelight together. Goyo hides lines further away and centers the text, limelight removes syntax highlighting from other paragraphs except the current one. So you have a simple, distraction free workspace

I guess goyo.vim + limelight.vim would help do the same. But at the end of the day, still means reaching for the mouse, dragging some borders around, etc.

If you like Goyo, you might like limelight, which does pretty much what you're looking for.

After having added ( set t_Co=256, as per https://github.com/junegunn/limelight.vim/issues/49 ) to my vimrc and sourcing it works now.

I don't know of a "global" function, but what you use depends largely on where you're doing your writing. It's possible to spellcheck markdown and html files from a terminal with aspell and to find the correct spelling of partial words with look. Some apps, like Grammarcheck can offer you close to global spellcheck. Apps like LanguageTool offer browser addons to check grammar and spelling.

LanguageTool - I liked using Grammarly to check my writing, but it is not great for privacy considering it sends off everything you write to Grammarly servers. LanguageTool is a great open source alternative that you can run locally.

On extensions, for example, I use LanguageTool [1], which is similar to Grammarly. It could be configured with a local server, although I have a “premium” account which sends data to a 3rd party server. I trust this extension to verify my messages on HN, but I can't trust it to have access to my banking account. This is an example of a really useful extension that I'll never be able to fully trust because it has access to all websites, and it sends all that I write to another server.

In fairness, Firefox's advantage has been that Mozilla has a trustworthy manual review process for the “recommended” extensions.
