Regarding your request for 1, have you looked into Immich [1]? If that's too much, I may recommend bewCloud [2] (I've created it almost 3 years ago, still going well), though it's really just serving the files, so search would have to match the file name.

The answer for the primary library turned out to be Immich, a self-hosted Google Photos alternative, running on a Synology NAS. I chose a two-bay Synology with 6TB of usable storage (two drives configured as a mirror, so a single drive failure doesn't cost me anything) and bumped the RAM to 16GB, which left plenty of headroom for Immich's machine-learning and thumbnail-generation workloads.

A few weeks ago I set myself a challenge: run Immich — a full self-hosted photo management platform — natively on my Android phone, without Docker, without root, and without any cloud dependency.

Native iOS and Android apps with automatic background upload, CLIP-based smart search (search "dog on beach" and it works), facial recognition with person grouping, a map view, shared albums, partner sharing, and a fast, polished web UI. With 90,000+ GitHub stars, it is one of the most popular self-hosted projects on the internet.

I can highly recommend Ente Photos[0]. It has automatic backup, and a very good replication architecture for maximum reliability[1]. It's also super easy to use and everything is encrypted by default.

Context: I'm working on an e2ee alternative to Google Photos[1] where we have to cluster embeddings (for face recognition) and run similarity searches (for semantic search[2]) on device.
