ImapSync
Imapsync is an IMAP transfers tool. The purpose of imapsync is to migrate IMAP accounts or to backup IMAP accounts. IMAP is one of the three current standard protocols to access mailboxes, the two others are POP3 and HTTP with webmails, webmails are often tied to an IMAP server. Upstream website is (by imapsync)

Personally, I use https://github.com/joeyates/imap-backup to archive all my emails and then only keep them on the remote server for as long as I need to (basically until I read them and respond or download an attachment into https://docs.paperless-ngx.com )

You'd need an IMAP backup tool. For example: https://github.com/joeyates/imap-backup . Add it to cron if you want it to backup periodically.

Need to import a mailbox with over 4 million emails into an O365 shared mailbox, but Microsoft has a limit of 1 million messages per folder - what are my options here?
Here's a bad idea that may work. https://github.com/joeyates/imap-backup. I used something like this when we migrated from ridiculous email system to exchange. However the clock is ticking on this option as it doesn't support modern authentication.

Transferring email account to new server question: Can I just copy via Cpanel/File Manager the entire folder "mail/domain/accountname" to preserve all the sub-folders the client has created?

Helping my parents use my NAS to store their old emails and share across all of their devices?
Do your parents have a domain, or are they just using the provider's domain? I've set up my 1522+ to backup our mail accounts using MailPlus on the Synology, and IMAPSYC running on my lab server. But it's backup only, not archiving. That technology could be used to get to your desired state, but there's some work involved to make a secure connection from the internet to your Synology possible, sync/archive the mail, configure you parent's devices to find your device, etc.

Seeking Advice on Backing Up Emails from External Email Providers - Not Hosting
There are two solutions for this 1. Using a tool called imap-sync to sync all your emails (it has a great incremental sync). You can run it periodically via cron 2. Using the same or similar tool and export to a database.
