IINA all day, everyday

While QuickTime Player is still supported, it's not in a good state imo. I've never found chapters to work, for example, and have had other issues like the app complaining about being "busy" when trying to trim a video. If you're willing to explore, I'd suggest trying out IINA instead. It doesn't support editing, but it's good at playing.

Xcode, since I work on apps (plus it's useful to build existing ones, like IINA).

IINA can do that and supports more formats. QuickTime Player is a bare bones player.

Good free alternative is MonitorControl. Pretty sure it does everything Lunar does but is open-sourced.

The best apps on macOS are BetterDisplay and Lunar by far in terms of features. MonitorControl is a strong offering as well, the gold standard in this field and is open source but it does not support recent M2 macs or any of the built-in HDMI ports of Macs since 2018 (note: BetterDisplay is the only macOS app that supports everything - Intel, M1, M2, USB-C, HDMI - even the HDMI port of the 2018 Mini).
