I use Hugo with the papermod theme

So, I ended up choosing the third option: building a website using a framework for static websites. After some googling I stumbled upon [[hugo]], which provides many themes, and supports Markdown and content organization through the use of taxonomies (e.g., categories, tags). One of the coolest themes I stumbled upon is PaperMod, a minimal theme suited for a blog. The documentation wasn't great and it didn't seem straightforward to change the homepage.

2. PaperMod

Add your font in static, reference in your override CSS. Also, there is a nice sample in their issues (which should have been the first place to ask this question).

All major browsers supports Mathml now, which means you can type latex and math equations without any need for JS libraries like KaTeX.

And for your request, I would suggest bearblog template [1] (it is inspired by bearblog itself). It doesn't use any JS and provide minimal way to have a blog (website) and quarto supports hugo specific format that can help. [2]

Couldn't agree more! If you didn't want a theme you could be up and running in an hour or you could spend a month making your own theme. I wanted something clean and fast to setup and load so I leaned on https://github.com/janraasch/hugo-bearblog

I looked at Medium, Substack, and ended up on Hashnode for a bit (Medium for devs, markdown blogging with a platform/feed).

I just recently setup a Hugo blog and hosted it on Netlify in an afternoon, doesn't look as "pretty" but loads much quicker.
