Show HN: YouTube banned adblockers so I built an extension to skip their ads
I use the Hosts file to block a ton of ads and that works really well. https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts Something worth considering if your ad blocker isn't working well.

Big things are happening with RaspAP's Ad Blocking 🛑 Users will soon have more blocklist sources to choose from
The no-tracking project used by RaspAP is shutting down, so we took the opportunity to search for open source blocklist alternatives. Among the best is Steven Black's hosts list: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts

Browser extensions spy on you, even if its developers don't
You can also use a declarative adblocker like uBlock Origin Lite [1], which only provides the browser with a list of elements to filter, but doesn't have any permissions to read content or perform requests. Or simply use your hosts file to apply OS-wide filtering with no browser add-ons needed: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts
Be aware that if you use these "passive" blocking methods, there are some sites like YouTube where you will see ads, because in these cases it's necessary to actually manipulate page content to hide them. What you can do is use a traditional adblocker but enable it only for these few sites where the declarative approach is not enough, take a look at [2] for more details.

I installed Firefox + uBlock Origin like everyone suggested in my previous post, but this pop-up still appears, now with a 5 sec timer.

[Paid Release]CCAdsBeGone - Customized Ads Blocking At Your Fingertips
When I select my custom hosts file, it basically breaks internet. However, if I choose a custom hosts file that is a copy of the dev's default, or if I just add a few lines to it, it will work. If I add too many lines, or use a different hosts file altogether (like the ones recommended by the dev), all connectivity breaks. Of course the latest official LetMeBlock is installed and mDNSResponder killed/restarted. I'm using Dopamine on A12+.

Where do you all get your DNS block lists from? Is there a public forum that has a list of them?
They are all here, sortable by syntaxe or software: https://filterlists.com/
- Blocking percentage is relatively low. Is it same for everyone or am i missing something?

App that detects shorts-format content overconsumption
1) I deleted youtube and similar apps from my phone 2) Switched default browser to firefox, and installed the uBlock origin extension 3) Searched for filter lists on https://filterlists.com/ that block YT shorts, YT recommendations etc., even hide the "Shorts" button.
- Are there any third party filter lists worth importing into uBlock?

I wish those anti-adblock pop ups were made illegal, carrying the death penalty.
ALUST is the first example that came to mind, don't discard my point because of that when filterlists.com is right there.

Based on various scientific studies, it takes at least 10-15 minutes for programmer to get back into the "zone" after an interruption. There are interesting resumption strategies for interrupted programming tasks.
There's also some mobile annoyances lists you can add. filterlists.com is a good place to start exploring.

Blocklist Syntax
You can just go to FilterLists and choose Pi-hole in the software column to see hundreds of options. Hell, if someone doesn't want to do any digging at all, they can even use the default aggregated blocklists from a service like Mullvad straight from their Github repository and call it a day. The whole thing is ridiculous. I don't get why anyone would limit themselves to one list on a flexible platform like Pi-hole, where they can easily pick a few carefully maintained lists and literally have the software aggregate those sources for them. The notion that Pi-hole isn't flexible is insane too, with regex easily filling in for AdBlock Plus syntax and the like.
What are some alternatives?
blitz-app-adblock - Simple and quick patcher that blocks ads/trackers on the Blitz.gg desktop application.
pihole-regex - Custom regex filter list for use with Pi-hole.
uBlock - uBlock Origin - An efficient blocker for Chromium and Firefox. Fast and lean.
WindowsSpyBlocker - Block spying and tracking on Windows
shallalist - DISCONTINUED!!! - Unpacked ShallaList Repo
The Blocklist Project - These lists were created because the founder of the project wanted something with a little more control over what is being blocked. Many lists out there are all or nothing. We set out to create lists with more control over what is being blocked and believe that we have accomplished that.
easylist - EasyList filter subscription (EasyList, EasyPrivacy, EasyList Cookie, Fanboy's Social/Annoyances/Notifications Blocking List)
uBlock-for-firefox-legacy - uBlock Origin for Firefox legacy-based browsers.
Pi-hole - A black hole for Internet advertisements
ClearURLs-Addon - ClearURLs is an add-on based on the new WebExtensions technology and will automatically remove tracking elements from URLs to help protect your privacy.
