hledger VS tokei

I'm surprised that there is no mentions of a great hacker-friendly plain-text accounting software called `ledger` https://ledger-cli.org/ in this thread. It has amazing documentation when it comes to understanding basic principles of double-entry bookkeeping and goes through many typical situations and usecases. There are also several forks, most popular and advanced is `hledger` https://hledger.org/ (h is for Haskell), which provides some neat features out of the box, such as a simple web interface. All of them are very primitive compared to "professional" accounting software, but in return it offers great opportunities for hacking around while ensuring validity of your books.

I've been using hledger[1] - similar tool but has more features like balance sheet, income statement generation with a plain text file for the last 3 years and it's been working out great. Before that I used iBank (rebranded as Banktivity) and don't miss it at all.

[files](https://github.com/simonmichael/hledger/blob/137d825/Makefil...) and this [bash script](https://github.com/simonmichael/hledger/blob/a3c300b/bake) have been replaced by this roughly equivalent [Justfile](https://github.com/simonmichael/hledger/blob/137d825/Justfil...) (some old things were commented out, some new things were added).

I'm only a few weeks in, and just has its own learning curve, but I'm very pleased overall. Cognitive load is down, usability is up, robustness is up.

Some years ago, I wrote myself a tool to download financial transactions from my bank and put them into a ledger journal. I found that manually entering the transaction with the hledger interface was too tedious for me.

hledger is looking very nice under neovim!

So If we would only count code and not comments, it is only 9489 LoC Rust. Which would be about 0.03% and if we take all lines and not only LoC it would be around 0.05%

thirdly: found this (https://github.com/XAMPPRocky/tokei) and wanted to analyze languages used on my system, didn't see a package manager (apt) for it that I had. So i installed cargo via apt-get rustup. Added the bin folder to $PATH via PATH=$PATH:~/.cargo/bin. But did not make it permanent. And stupidly rand tokei on "/", realizing how long and unhelpful that would be killed it. Then ran it in a dump folder with some very nested repo dumps, and tons of wolfram.nb files. After killing that too, and attempting to kill via system monitor. Still have two of those as zombie processes.

For what it's worth, tokei seems to be named after tokei.

BTW, for more info on how it is done, you can check out tokei which is the library use by onefetch for code statistics.

With pytokei you can count code quickly using all the power from tokei, but from python.

Tokei is a nice utility to count lines and stats of code. It is very fast, accurate, and has a nice output. It supports over 150 languages and can output in JSON, YAML, CBOR, and human-readable tables.

Not sure if anyone mentioned tokei yet but it’s excellent

My approach would be to use Tokei to count LOC and cargo-tree(1) to find dependencies. You can then locate the dependencies in the registry and count each of their LOC, then combine the results.
