No space, so I installed my rig on my window! (details on comments)
I play Automobilista2, Dirt Rally 2.0, Dirt4, Dirt3, AC, BeamNG.drive . I use the hid-tmff2 wheel driver (dkms module). Protopedal script for pedal/device emulation. Or sometimes xboxdrv if protopedal doesn't fit my use case perfectly. Everything works fine(tm) but of course as is the Linux way, things do need fiddling sometimes. But I like the learning experience and treat it more like an additional hobby.

Are there currently any Direct Drive racing wheels for driving sim/gaming available that work on Linux?
Not completely true. There exists a driver for Thrustmaster T300: https://github.com/Kimplul/hid-tmff2 Other wheels I also have seen supported are some fanatec wheels: https://github.com/gotzl/hid-fanatecff

new to this and would appreciate some advice about Linux compatible hardware.
It's a step down from Fanatec, though nicer than Logitech, but I've had a good experience using a Thrustmaster T300 wheel + T-LCM pedals + TH8A shifter in Linux. Getting FFB working was the trickiest part but solved with [this driver](https://github.com/Kimplul/hid-tmff2). The others were plug and play.

Thrustmaster T300 Ferrari Integral Racing Wheel won't work on Linux
I already tried to install this Linux Kernel Module which didn't help. I think I did something wrong while I installing the Kernel Module. If somebody already did that, please let me know what you have done exactly.

Sim racing on Linux?? 2021 H2.
To get the T300 working with FFB use this driver along with Oversteer for settings management. I still used Windows to update T300 firmware and calibrate T-LCM pedals.

Discord push-to-talk with steering wheel
I use a Thrustmaster T300 with the hid-tmf22 driver and Oversteer in Pop!_OS.

Gamer thinking of swapping to Linux, have some compatibility concerns.
For the wheel, I have a G29 which works without any issue. Rotation and FFB gain is customizable easily with oversteer which support G27 as well.

Steamdeck
Unsure how easy to setup extra linux apps on SteamDeck, but this is one tool for FFB in linux : https://github.com/berarma/oversteer

Wheel FFB
there's oversteer: https://github.com/berarma/oversteer which says it works with your wheel once you also add this module: https://github.com/gotzl/hid-fanatecff

Sim racing on Linux/Steam Deck 2022 an update
Oversteer: This utility allows you to change the range of the steering wheel, combine pedals, create profiles for games, test axis and buttons, and automatically modify the rule permissions to easily use wheel. ITelemetry: It's possible to activate and consult telemetry in F1 2017 thanks to this software designed to be used with Java

Please open-source ghub so I can make a software that's actually worth a shit.
On Linux there's libratbag/Piper for keyboards and mice and new-lg4ff/Oversteer for steering wheels, if you want to take a look at how they do some things or straight up just fork them and port to Windows.

The state of Linux gaming blows my mind
I'm using an old g27 and configure it with https://github.com/berarma/oversteer I haven't done anything else. I'm not sure how it is with thrustmaster. I don't have anything to compare it with to tell you if the feedback is good. It may vary if you are going to use third party drivers.

Are there currently any Direct Drive racing wheels for driving sim/gaming available that work on Linux?
There is a Fanatec driver, and a configuration utility which is working on support for various wheels. I don't have any first hand knowledge of these.
What are some alternatives?
new-lg4ff - Experimental Logitech force feedback module for Linux
tmdrv - Mirror of https://gitlab.com/her0/tmdrv — Tool to initialize some Thrustmaster racing wheels on Linux.
hid-fanatecff - Driver to support FANATEC input devices, in particular ForceFeedback of various wheel-bases
antimicrox - Graphical program used to map keyboard buttons and mouse controls to a gamepad. Useful for playing games with no gamepad support.
logitech-g-hub-settings-extractor - This is a small python tool to extract the json file stored inside the "settings.db" file of the Logitech G Hub app. This allows you to update the json and then replace the file blob inside the db with the new json.
Proton - Compatibility tool for Steam Play based on Wine and additional components
hid-tminit - Linux driver to properly initialize some Thrustmaster Wheels
ALVR - Stream VR games from your PC to your headset via Wi-Fi
t150_driver - Linux driver for Thrustmaster T150 Steering Wheel USB
