Stars - the number of stars that a project has on GitHub. Growth - month over month growth in stars.
Activity is a relative number indicating how actively a project is being developed. Recent commits have higher weight than older ones.
For example, an activity of 9.0 indicates that a project is amongst the top 10% of the most actively developed projects that we are tracking.

On the other hand, this is a shellscript under 1000 lines. It won't work in a general case (obvious example: try writing some JSON into a commit message), but at least it's straightforward.

I've used some in the past but forget which ones-- IIRC usually in the form of a pre-commit hook, https://gist.github.com/qoomon/5dfcdf8eec66a051ecd85625518cfd13#commit-msg-hook-local or https://github.com/fteem/git-semantic-commits seem promising.
