Help switching from https to SSH to push files to a repository
You can still use HTTPS, just not username/password as authentication. Personally, I think using HTTPS Git Credential Manager is simpler than SSH, as GCM allows you to use GitHub OAuth in your browser to sign in.

Tell HN: GitHub no longer supporting unauthenticated `git://`
https://github.com/GitCredentialManager/git-credential-manag... (comes bundled with Git for Windows; you can install it for macOS). SSH is also an option on both platforms, though historically a bit harder on Windows than elsewhere.
(Disclosure, two of the core maintainers of GCM are GitHub employees, though GCM's goal is to work well with any Git host.)

Improving Git protocol security on GitHub
Using username/PAT works with https://, not git://.
An easier route might be GCM Core (https://github.com/microsoft/Git-Credential-Manager-Core). And of course, disclosure, I'm the product manager for GCM Core and author of this blog post.

anyone know why vscode might post under a different username
If the user in the config file and what you see on github are different, my next guess is you're using the SSH or GPG key of the account shown on github. See https://github.com/settings/keys
