I found a post or two like this one that seemed to have a similar issue but the root cause it definitely different.

How do I go about hosting a gatsby frontend with WordPress backend?
Build your Gatsby site locally based on something like the Wordpress starter template (gatsby new my-gatsby-project https://github.com/GatsbyCentral/gatsby-starter-wordpress). Be sure the imoort of the data from Wordpress works and the site runs locally as expected.
