frp VS awesome-tunneling

Seems to be the exact opposite of https://github.com/fatedier/frp which is a reverse tunnel over a variety of protocols (including HTTP).

I've been self-hosting https://github.com/fatedier/frp on my little box, and it feels insane to think of the times where I didn't have it set up. There are many choices in the space as others pointed out, but frp's capabilities and lightweight packaging blows all other setups out of the water. I placed mine behind nginx with Let's Encrypt for SSL support. Hella fresh!

My setup to do the same:

- small Hetzner instance

- my domain's dns pointing to that instance

- frps[1] running on that instance

- frpc running on my local machine and connected to the cloud frps

An easy service to use is FRP, recently found it and it basically handles making the connection out of the network and is really easy to setup. https://github.com/fatedier/frp I personally having it running on a VPS and the client then running on my local network pointing at a reverse proxy which then handles sending it to the diffrent clients.

Another way around is to use reverse proxy like frp but since you need SSH anyway, all you need is already comes with SSH (reverse SSH)

You may want to take a look at FRP. It’s the same idea like Cloudflare tunnel, just without all the sophisticated features. You put a server (frps) on a VPS with public IP, and a client (frpc) within your home NAT. It can do both TCP and HTTP reverse proxy. I recommend a simple TCP one, and let your local nginx handle SSL.

There are a whole bunch of alternatives too - https://github.com/anderspitman/awesome-tunneling. I will advocate for zrok.io as I work on its parent project, OpenZiti. zrok is open source and has a free SaaS as well as more built in security.

Personally I work on two similar projects you might want to check out: zrok and OpenZiti. Similar projects, but zrok is closest to what you did here.

Thanks for the history. I maintain this list[0], and wasn't aware of OG localtunnel, likely because there's a somewhat newer and now more popular project with the same name[1]. You appear to be correct on timing. Here's the earliest commits on GitHub for each of the projects:

I haven't tried vscode forwarding. What features does it have that are missing from most of the options on the list[0]?

Your use case sounds interesting and there may be a tool out there that will do it, but I can't quite wrap my head around your description of how everything is connected and what runs where with your current setup.

I agree with sibling that my main question is what prevents you from using SSHFS or similar?

I'm starting to try to get into Cloudflare tunnel, Tailscale funnel and other alternatives. What I need is my services to be accessible without any installation client-side, and I'm unsure what services provide this. We have a section for overlay networks on the tunneling list[0] I maintain. This is a very interesting space with some excellent software.

I certainly have my gripes about the closed nature of Slack itself, in particular using a closed protocol when the model is clearly "federated" between multiple servers internally. That said, the contribution of something on the scale and quality of Nebula back to the open source community is hard to argue with.
