fpm VS Eel

There is definitely a lot more to building a proper package for wider distribution, but there are some great tools out there for folks wanting to get into it that make it more approachable. I've done my fair share with fpm when learning how the proverbial sausage is made.

Probably a good moment to point out the existence of fpm.

If you're not using docker, you can as an alternative artifact generate distribution-native packages like RPM or DEB files, which can include startup scripts etc. I used fpm for this in the past, now I mostly use docker images.

I see in your GitHub issues a lot of requests for different platform builds. To kill about a dozen of those birds with one stone check out FPM https://github.com/jordansissel/fpm

If you need to build packages for many platforms, a tool like fpm https://github.com/jordansissel/fpm can make things a little easier, at the expense of making your source package a bit nonstandard.

FPM Packaging:

A few years ago I jumped on the fpm train. You might need to couple it up with some scripts, but it greatly simplifies things.

I gave up a long time ago attempting to write GUIs in pure python. I've come back to them periodically to see if the landscape has changed, but I'm always disappointed.

My current go-to python GUI solution is to use the Eel library. It renders GUIs in a web-browser like window with HTMl/CSS/JS.It lets you expose your python functions to JavaScript, so data can be easily transferred back and forth between the python and the JavaScript. And since it's just web-dev, it's pretty easy to make things look and feel good enough. Any other web-dev libraries like bootstrap and jquery can be used. It works pretty well for writing GUIs that put data analysis tools in front of my colleagues.

Eel was used to implement the app and communication with the web interface.

If you don't want a web-app, you can still use JS for GUI, using something like python-eel https://github.com/python-eel/Eel

Oh nice, it was abandoned for quite a while, at least for the duration i used it, which led me to move my app to flask.

Similar to https://github.com/python-eel/Eel but that one is semi-abandoned. I did one internal tool with eel and it's pretty handy for such tools. Yours could be the future/supported alternative ;)
