Flux VS atlantis

Right. Flux was a handy little tool[1] that sync'd yaml manifests in git repos to live clusters. The concept was fascinating, and the tool was well done--small and efficient. Easy to learn.

In 2019, they announced they'd be "merging" with argocd[2]. It seems the merge never really took place, and after that they deprecated flux and announced flux2[3].

The sudden changes of course were a little confusing and perhaps not too well communicated.

If you are looking at multiple instances of Flux on a cluster which is unmaintained, then most likely you are looking at Flux v1 which is the legacy version and users are all recommended to migrate to the new Flux v2 that has the feature of multiple git repositories and supporting to allow multiple syncs or even multiple tenants.

CI/CD: Tekton Flux

Use ArgoCD or Flux for Kubernetes, and Serverless Stack for your serverless Lambda applications.

Does a tool like this exist? I am aware of the argoCD image updater which is similar but not quite what I’m looking for, and am aware that flux has an old feature request for this https://github.com/fluxcd/flux/issues/2711

The blog post by Weaveworks, which coined the term GitOps in 2017, also names the first GitOps operator: Flux. In the meantime, this has been completely rewritten as Flux v2. In addition to Flux and Flux v2, the associated project "Flux" develops other components. Weaveworks has now handed the project over to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). By now, the project is in the second maturity level: incubator phase.

Looks really neat. We have a not-super-trivial rails app that I want to move to docker one day, but kinda scared to make the jump. We're already using docker for development, plus even have a home-grown docker-compose setup for ephemeral labs, but it's clunky at best.

This seems like something that might provide a simple jumping board hopefully... Also bumped into fluxCD[0] recently which also looks interesting.

This is definitely one piece of Kubernetes that is getting a lot of attention recently. The three tools I've been paying attention to are Argo CD[0], Flux[1], and Config Sync[2].

All of these allow you to point your repository to a cluster and sync resources from the repo to the cluster, including deletes.

https://www.runatlantis.io/ is a tool for collaborating on Terraform, enables developers and operators to run terraform plan and apply directly from Terraform pull requests. Atlantis then comments back on the pull request with the output of the commands.

None of these are a replacement of Terraform Cloud (recently rebranded to HCP Terraform). For example, when you create a PR, it could affect multiple workspaces. The new experimental version of TFC/TFE (I refuse to call it HCP!) implements Stacks, which is something like a workflow, and links one workspace output to other workspace inputs. None of the open-source solutions, including the paid Digger [0], support this - only the paid one, such as Spacelift [1] (which is the closest to TFC if you ask me). Having a monorepo of Terraform is a common design pattern, so, if I change an embedded module, it could trigger changes it many workspaces. As far as I know, Atlantis [2] can't really help in this case.

By the way, the reason I singled-out Spacelift is due to its quality, and the great Terraform provider it has. Scalr [3], for example, has a really low-quality Terraform provider. I extensively use the hashicorp/tfe provider to manage TFC itself.

Atlantis is a pull request automation tool that works well with plain Terraform right away. But what if we're already using Terramate to generate Terraform code?

Atlantis automates reviewing and deploying Terraform via pull requests, streamlining collaboration and ensuring consistency across Terraform deployments.

For example, Atlantisgo for Terraform, Zapier’s Kubechecks for Argo CD, Quizlet’s GitHub action all do something similar to this. But a generic, extensible tool for IaC providers doesn’t seem to exist. Additionally, many of them require exposing your Kubernetes cluster or other infrastructure to third-party access, webhooks, etc.

Our first attempt was to introduce other engineering teams to Terraform - the Platform team was already using it extensively with Terragrunt, and using Atlantis to automate plan and apply operations in a Git flow to ensure infrastructure was consistent. We'd written modules, with documentation, and an engineer would simply need to raise a PR to use the module and provide the right values, and Atlantis (once the PR was approved by Platform) would go ahead and set it up for them.

Alternatively, you can look at solutions like Atlantis or spacelift.

We use Atlantis [0] for CI/CD automation of Terraform pull requests to a centralized repository. It's pretty good too, especially for a self-hosted solution. I can't see how Terraform Cloud's costs would be justifiable for us without a custom contract.
