Show HN: Play Heroes of Might and Magic II demo from 1996 in the browser
Emscripten port https://github.com/midzer/fheroes2 took me over 24 hours due removal of multi-threaded code - and rather slow compile laptop. Currently Browser Audio API can't run in a worker at all. PThreads are stable in Emscripten but can make issues for example if main thread is blocked via mutexes.

fheroes2 is here now https://github.com/ihhub/fheroes2 and it's anything BUT dormant.
Updated less than a day ago and version 1.0.3 released four days ago.
You have linked a very old and outdated version. The development is progressing at a good pace, but here: https://github.com/ihhub/fheroes2 The project has recently reached version 1.0.

Heroes of Might and Magic III for the Switch
I know that it's possible to play Heroes of Might and Magic II on the Switch with https://ihhub.github.io/fheroes2/ or DOSBox but I'm not sure if you can also play Heroes of Might and Magic III.

Any open source libraries that I can contribute to?
Try choose project which can be started very simple and have great guide for getting started. Because you new to the project, would be good to just make it build, and run test with as little frictions as possible. For example https://github.com/ihhub/fheroes2/blob/master/docs/DEVELOPMENT.md this is mid sized project which are welcoming, and at the same time you just can build project by following instructions. Because you can run code, you can change it.

I installed all available towns via VCMI Launcher and it seems that VCMI v1.2 has no problem with them. On gigantic maps, however, you will have to wait longer for your turn. Towns: Death Valley, Preserve, Pavilion, Asylum, Cetatea, Abyss, Heavenly Forge, Retreat, Greenhouse... link in comments.

The HD mod has not been the recommended way to play the game in maybe seven or eight years. You want VCMI which is an open source reimplementation project similar to projects like OpenTTD, OpenXCom, OpenRA, OpenRCT2, CorsixTH, and OpenMW.

It's just that version 1.0 didn't ship with an updated metainfo.xml file. That has been fixed in v1.1.0: https://github.com/vcmi/vcmi/commits/develop/launcher/eu.vcmi.VCMI.metainfo.xml
