too overwhelmed
yes, you can start building the house from the roof, as you suggest, or you can use some kind of planner, and start building from the ground.
-
Any recommendations on some useful planning tools?
factoriolab.github.io - my favorite, but if you need a tool for layout, not a calculator - I'm using my imagination
-
Got overwhelmed by Rocket science packs in SE
I can recommend https://factoriolab.github.io
-
I WILL automate blue science this time
You mean the best one, so factoriolab[https://factoriolab.github.io ] aren't you?
-
Mod to calculate how many assemblers a full belt will support?
There are also online calculators for this: https://factoriolab.github.io
-
I am having a hard time reading and understanding the ratios on the factorio cheat sheet. Red science makes sense, I need to make 1 gear/s to supply 10 red science assemblers. But beyond that I don't understand.
https://factoriolab.github.io/ is pretty similar, but also supports mods and some more options
You might be interested in checking out factoriolab or kirkmcdonald. Both tools work great for planning the amount of machines needed to make a specific factory.

Is there a place (not in-game) to find all the recipes from space exploration without opening the game?
FactorioLab has recipes from several popular mods, including SE, K2, SE+K2, Py, PyAL, A&B, SeaBlock and more.
-
How do you like to plan your factory layout?
I mostly make extensive use of factoriolab online calculator. How much planning I'm doing also changes throughout the game:

External tools to design production chains?
There's a production chain calculator called FactorioLab which already supports several games beyond just Factorio, and had some discussion about supporting Captain of Industry, but doesn't yet. I would guess there hasn't been a lot of work into it yet because CoI is still relatively early, and has had some significant recipe changes.

I'M SORRY WHAT THE FUCK???? (Pyanodon recipe for simplest circuit board!)
Hey, would appreciate input from a "btw" person presently. I've put together a PKGBUILD for yafc: https://github.com/ShadowTheAge/yafc/issues/187

I am baffled and need assistance, explanation in comments :)
If you get into mods, esspecially ones with loops, something like YAFC or Foreman 2 is much better.
-
Is there a place (not in-game) to find all the recipes from space exploration without opening the game?
YAFC is a standalone desktop app for calculating production lines and ratios (basically a not-in-game version of mods like Helmod or FP, except that it deals significantly better with complex nested production chains). it can also be used to simply explore mod recipes and production chains, and has a built-in FNEI-like feature
-
What kind of mods are there that make the game harder with new challenges or progression milestones, rather than making existing challenges harder?
if you do play it i recommend using "Yet Another Factorio Calculator"
-
Best Factorio mods 2022
You could add outside planners too, especially YAFC and Foreman are outstanding.
- More flexible calculator than Kirk McDonald?
-
Whay your notes for Factorio look like? That's my messy notes
My notes/plans are in YAFC with annotations about the current state of each entry/block (planned, working on it, implemented, needs a update after research, etc).
-
Factory planner - Foreman 2.0 now in alpha access!
However, I think you and OP might both be interested in YAFC. It is written in .Net and it can run on linux (although I haven't personally done so). It does amazing things once you understand how to use it, especially with Py mods.
- Is there an Angels+bobs/Seablock calculator akin to something like kirkmacdonald for vanilla?
What are some alternatives?
factorio-docker - Factorio headless server in a Docker container
Foreman2 - Visual planning tool for Factorio
RedMew - The RedMew scenario code for Factorio.
factorio-lab-tools - Lua parser to build data and icons for FactorioLab base recipe sets
ModMyFactory2 - Rewrite of ModMyFactory, the Factorio mod manager
factorio-blueprint-visualizer - A python library to artfully visualize Factorio Blueprints and an interactive web demo for using it.
FactoryPlanner - A mod for Factorio. It allows you to plan out your production in detail.
jira-clone-angular - A simplified Jira clone built with Angular, ng-zorro and Akita
ksp-visual-calculator - Online tool for Kerbal Space Program that helps players determine delta-v requirements for a mission, and what type of comms dishes a certain satellite requires.
Sidekick - The main repository for the Sidekick project, a companion trade tool for Path of Exile.
Foreman - Visual planning tool for the game Factorio
