esphome VS IRremoteESP8266

You might want to take a look at https://esphome.io/ for an easy integration of an ESP32/8266 into home Assistant.

You can do this with a $30 Sonoff S31 running ESPHome [0]. Since the Sonoff wall switch can run a ping sensor against your server you could create a watchdog automation right on the S31 to shut off the mains power to the S31 switch and turn back on after X seconds.

There are other ways you could have the S31 do operational checks but ultimately ESPHome is probably an interesting consideration and supported by tons of off the shelf hardware.

They're pretty great and compatible with most things. ESPHome [1] is a great resource for getting ESP32's working nicely with HA and you can find lots of projects using it to learn from.

You'll likely need to do soldering if you want to connect sensors, batteries and the like.

Personally I really like what SEEED Studio [2] does with their ESP32 boards and they have nice docs.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but for the simple stuff you may just want to use something like EspHome where you just need to create a yaml file. Once you’re comfortable with that maybe get into something a bit more advanced, but esphome make it a breeze. It integrates with home assistant if you already have that in place as well.

ESPHome. It's a framework for declaratively building firmware for microcontrollers, based on rules like "This pin is an input with debouncing, when it changes, toggle this".

Contributing to them has probably been the most fun I've had programming in years.

We just need power management, and a C++ implementation of the Native API client. It's so close to being able to replace most of what I'd normally code by hand in Arduino.

Vorta: It's the best backup technology I've seen. Just an easy guided GUI for Borg, which gives you deduplication. I just wish they let you deduplicate across multiple repositories somehow.

You should be able to accomplish similar with a yaml configuration file.

https://esphome.io < find a board + sensor pair here. Software stack tested with your board+sensor is hard to beat.

ESP32 boards: surprisingly fast/powerful little SOC with wifi

ThermTerm solves all the problems I've had with these physical controls, while integrating the heat pumps into Home Assistant via MQTT. Additional sensors pipe temperature, humidity and light data, for statistics and automation. Out of the box, ThermTerm supports Mitsubishi's infrared protocol, since that's the system I have. Thanks to integration with IRRemoteESP8266, you can make ThermTerm work with your own heat pumps by writing a few lines of adaptor code.

This library has the IR codes defined for tons of heat pumps. The only thing about node red is that it uses Java to build the UI on the webserver. If your already familiar with Java then no big deal, but it's just one more syntax to learn lol.

I used this library with a D1 mini. I then use this to put in my dashboard There are some examples one is a receiver code that you can get your codes, they also have a lot of ACs codes already. There is also an IRServer example that integrates with MQTT and has some stuff to put in your configuration.yaml so you can get it into HA easily I used this for 6 Samsung ACs, LG Dryer, some basic fans with IR. Samsung is the same each command is like all commands in one on, temp, etc. It has all this built in. I think if you have a IR receiver on your esp board and it will sometimes pick up the commands sent by the regular remote so if someone else uses the dumb remote it will update in HA. It's not perfect but it works pretty well. you can get all in one boards on ali express if you search iresp8255 they have transmitters and receivers.

I have tried https://github.com/Arduino-IRremote/Arduino-IRremote and https://github.com/crankyoldgit/IRremoteESP8266, both cause the same error.

First, try to remove the resistor(i was made an ir remote using the top circuit for ir sender). check the components, maybe one of them are dead. Second, check the gpio and config. Third, maybe the problem is the code. I was able to finally read one of my remote codes that my other receiver couldn't with the flipper. I then used this library with a D1 mini.

If it has a remote you can try to control it with an ESP32 with an extra infrared led. Check if it is supported by this library. Some coding would be needed.

Found a link to this library in the documentation. For esp32/8266 it says. Haven't tried it myself.
