Proof of Concept clang plugin that automatically binds C/C++ -> Lua
Their DEFUN and DEFVAR macros for example let us define a function or a variable that will be available as a Lisp function, and can be used as an ordinary C function from the C code. Emacs is written in pure C99 language and works with both GCC and Clang I believe. We can just define a C function via macro, and it is auto exported and made available to Lisp. For example my first patch to Emacs was for this function (we added "count" argument to make it possible to skip enumerating files in a directory for the case when user code is just interesting if a directory is empty or not):

How to fix Emacs constant freezing on long lines?
If you're like me and you are a hard fan of word wrapping, in emacs 29, it looks like they added two variables which you can modify so emacs would perform better (performance is still not as smooth as vscode): long-line-threshold and large-hscroll-threshold. long-line-threshold works this way: if there exists a line in the current buffer that has more characters than the specified value, emacs would start the performance functionalities. Also large-hscroll-threshold also work the same way as long-line-threshold but it starts the performance functionalities when the wrapped line becomes more than the specified value. I'm not exactly sure if the conditions for both long-line-threshold and large-hscroll-threshold should be met for the perfomance functionalities to be enabled or only one of them meeting the condition would cause the functionalities to start. You can also see if the functionalities are enabled in the current buffer by evaluating the function long-line-optimizations-p. If evaluating (long-line-optimizations-p) returns nil, it means the performance improvements aren't applied, if it returns non nil, it means they are enabled. Search for "Emacs is now capable of editing" in that page and the section about these features would come up. You should also disable features related to bidirectional editing and stuff.

Yes, the documentation is up to date. If you browse the commit history you will notice that many of the commits are changes to the documentation. Emacs is a living, breathing application and IDE.

Recently did something similar in Rust but for generating SVGs. We've adopted it for snapshot testing of cargo and rustc's output. There’s also other reasons. For example, take binary search:
* prefetch + cmov. These should be part of the STL but languages and compilers struggle to emit the cmov properly (Rust’s been broken for 6 years: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/53823). Prefetch is an interesting one because while you do optimize the binary search in a micro benchmark, you’re potentially putting extra pressure on the cache with “garbage” data which means it’s a greedy optimization that might hurt surrounding code. Probably should have separate implementations as binary search isn’t necessarily always in the hot path.
* Eytzinger layout has additional limitations that are often not discussed when pointing out “hey this is faster”. Adding elements is non-trivial since you first have to add + sort (as you would for binary search) and then rebuild a new parallel eytzinger layout from scratch (i.e. you’d have it be an index of pointers rather than the values themselves which adds memory overhead + indirection for the comparisons). You can’t find the “insertion” position for non-existent elements which means it can’t be used for std::lower_bound (i.e. if the element doesn’t exist, you just get None back instead of Err(position where it can be slotted in to maintain order).
Basically, optimizations can sometimes rely on changing the problem domain so that you can trade off features of the algorithm against the runtime. These kinds of algorithms can be a bad fit for a standard library which aims to be a toolbox of “good enough” algorithms and data structures for problems that appear very very frequently. Or they could be part of the standard library toolkit just under a different name but you also have to balance that against maintenance concerns.

Keep in mind that subjectively comparing programming languages might be a tricky business. But at the end, it will be up to your use case/project to prefer a language over the other.
