doomemacs VS undotree

Yes, you need to install Emacs. It is probably available from whatever package manager your system uses.

I prefer Doom (https://github.com/doomemacs/doomemacs) to Spacemacs. However I haven't looked at Spacemacs for many years; perhaps it's now on par with Doom.

Ever since I've started my Emacs journey it seemed like the wholy grail to have your own (vanilla!) configuration without any hard dependencies on frameworks like Doom or Spacemacs. There are plenty of dotemacs configurations ouf there which can serve as a great source of inspiration.

I am a long-time Emacs user and used to maintain my own config, but I switched to Doom Emacs [1] a year ago. Doom Emacs is like a pre-packaged/pre-configured emacs distro. You still need to configure the features that you want to use, but it's a lot easier (and faster) than having to do everything from scratch, and definitely if you already have some emacs background anyway. For me, it makes the newer, more advanced, features more accessible. Since switching, I started to use Emacs more again.

For example, if you look at Doom's Clojure module, which is broken down into a package-declaring file and a package-configuring file like every other module, you'll see that it's doing things that you could easily recreate in a personal setup too. You can't exactly copy-paste it; the package! and use-package! macros are Doom's own, but they're thin wrappers around the vanilla use-package so you could migrate their functionality pretty easily. Same for map! that's for keybinds, which is a wrapper around general.el.

About the environment, well, VScode is unholy, obviously. But if you already know how to use it, that's one less thing to learn right now, which can be a very big plus. PyCharm might be an easy alternative to vscode. KDevelop is nice, too. The obvious choices would be either emacs or vim, with only the former being holy. Both will require months getting used to but are generally considered worth the effort. Emacs has distributions like doom and spacemacs, making it somewhat easier accessible, should you dare to tumble down that rabbit hole.

What's helped me much more lately is undotree for vim [1]. It basically logs every single time a file is saved. Its much more useful because commits have to be made by humans and they may not do it often (and usually there is an incentive for "clean or working commits"). There have been many times where I went back to copy something from the undotree.

Hi, I love Vim, and use it for big projects too, with many files. Often I switch between many files, make changes, undo, and get lost in them, trying to find a file that I edited and undoed a few minutes ago. I think, maybe exists some plugin, that will visualize my history of changes, like UndoTree, but across multiple buffers? And/or list of my teleportations between buffers? I can imagine this, also like a tree...

Although I don't use autosave, I don't think it matters that much with vim because you can always use undotree[0]

Vim has a plugins for that too. ;)

I use https://github.com/mbbill/undotree but if that's not to your choice there are many others.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as unknown but undotree is a life saver for me. I don't need it often but when I need it, it shows me all changes in a file for the current session.
