Home Manager using Nix
-
What is the difference between NixOS and any other distro running the nix package manager?
home-manager allows managing user profile on other Linux distros
-
Fulfilling a reader's request for my “dot files”
I've used many different methods but none of them stuck until I started using https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager
-
My System won't build anymore
homeconfig.nix: ```terminal { config, pkgs, ... }: let home-manager = builtins.fetchTarball "https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager/archive/master.tar.gz"; in { imports = [ (import "${home-manager}/nixos") ];
That appears to be from home-manager. But that doesn't make any sense because lib.extend does exist.
The output of sudo nix-channel --list is: terminal home-manager https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager/archive/release-22.11.tar.gz nixos https://nixos.org/channels/nixos-22.11
-
How does the workflow look with flake based config?
Flakes have nothing to do with dotfiles though. There's a nix thing called home-manager that handles dotfiles with nix, but that can be used with or without flakes
-
How do I update packages when using home-manager?
nix-channel --add https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager/archive/master.tar.gz home-manager
-
Simple way to install package using Nix on macOS?
Home manager might also be a good solution for you
-
How to update i3wm?
Sudo nix-channels: home-manager https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager/archive/master.tar.gz nixos https://nixos.org/channels/nixos-unstable nixpkgs https://nixos.org/channels/nixpkgs-unstable

The Determinate Nix Installer
2. Take a look at https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager
Good luck!
What are some alternatives?
Ansible - Ansible is a radically simple IT automation platform that makes your applications and systems easier to deploy and maintain. Automate everything from code deployment to network configuration to cloud management, in a language that approaches plain English, using SSH, with no agents to install on remote systems. https://docs.ansible.com.
nixos-flake-example - This is a demo NixOS config, with optional flakes support. Along with notes on why flakes is useful and worth adopting.
GNU Stow - GNU Stow - mirror of savannah git repository occasionally with more bleeding-edge branches
batocera.linux - batocera.linux
NixOS-WSL - NixOS on WSL(2) [[email protected]]
emacs-overlay - Bleeding edge emacs overlay [[email protected]]
nix-darwin - nix modules for darwin
NixOS-docker - DEPRECATED! Dockerfiles to package Nix in a minimal docker container
chezmoi - Manage your dotfiles across multiple diverse machines, securely.
yadm - Yet Another Dotfiles Manager
docker-pihole-unbound - Run Pi-Hole + Unbound on Docker
guix-nonfree - Unofficial collection of packages that are not going to be accepted in to guix
