django-prometheus VS blackbox_exporter

We have a Django Graphene app working, and are gather Prometheus telemetry to monitor our end points. We are leveraging the Django Prometheus Middle Ware and are able to get telemetry and view it via Grafana. This all works and is awesome.

Prometheus stores data in a custom format and provides it's own metrics SDK's. Uriel Corfa has done the heavy lifting for us by writing an app which hooks into the Django middleware, ORM and cache layer and automatically exposes metrics generalized metrics. All you need to do is to install and configure django-prometheus.

So you need 2 modules, one for each ip version. As for autamating setting these up, we deploy our Prometheus server with salt so we can use Jinja templating in all our Prometheus config files. That really cuts down on repeating boiler plate code.

This is also interesting for other reasons; in host downtime situations you can sometime see they will drop one type of traffic and not the other.

A Pi is more than enough to run a full monitoring stack. Why reinvent the wheel?

You can also use the blackbox_exporter to probe various endpoints. But in reality, you don't need to do this most of the time since the up metric gets you what you want.

You could use prometheus as a monitoring tool, blackbox_exporter to "export" the urls to prometheus, alertmanager for notifications, and grafana for nice gui dashboards (and maybe also notifications).

Personally, I use have Prometheus with Blackbox exporter to create metrics for sites I need to monitor. Grafana then uses Prometheus as a data source, so I can monitor the data. I've also set up email alerts in Grafana.

We have blackbox_exporter running in different AWS regions as well as a few DO droplets. prometheus scrapes the data.
