diaspora* is still a thing, and what you describe looks like its concept of "aspect", which was developed before google+ " circles". It is AGPL, you're welcome to contribute or fork it. https://github.com/diaspora/diaspora

to be fair, its not Mastodon, its the #Fediverse. Mastodon is arguably the least rich platfrom on the 'verse. IMHO Friendica is where its at, and you can still communicate with all the twitter refugees on Mastodon, as well as meater content on services likeDiaspora*, not to mention full integration with Lemmy (which works fairly similar to Reddit) while Masto you can see lemmy posts and replies without having to leave your preferred application or webpage, but you can only reply, you can post your own from a Mastodon account.

I think that is what Diaspora aimed for. Although they made it WAY too complicated. Hasn't even reached a million active accounts.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the work that is currently being done. The developers who are excellent at building federated systems typically aren't cryptographers. For example. Another issue.

ActivityPub is a decentralized social network used by Mastodon, which resembles an older version of Twitter, as well as Pixelfed, which resembles older Instagram, Friendica, which resembles older Facebook, and others.

Mastodon might be the wrong thing for you here, as it's more akin to Twitter. For Instagram you're better off with Pixelfed, for Facebook it would be Friendica. The advantage is that all of these can still talk to each other.

AFAIK Friendica is closer to Facebook in function, with different community groups and such. It's part of the Fediverse too so kinda compatible with Mastodon. I haven't tried it though. Someone recommend a server?

After what happened, I think it's the time to craft our own little social media. Decentralized social media. I'm not talking about Facebook, Twitter or even Reddit. I'm talking about social media like Mastodon, Pleroma and Friendica. What we need is work together actually. Some of us co-op by give time to host and maintain the VPS or dedicated server, others maybe help by moderate it and others help by donations or share.
