Elon Musk drove more than a million people to Mastodon – but many aren’t sticking around: More than 130,000 people were joining the new independent social media network a day in November. So why hasn’t it taken off?

- Since we are being censored by reddit. Do we activate the Gangnam protocol?

Twitter will remove accounts created solely to promote other social platforms
I remember making similar comments about Diaspora vs Facebook a decade ago, but people are... lazy. Yeah, let's go with lazy.

Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
diaspora* is still a thing, and what you describe looks like its concept of "aspect", which was developed before google+ " circles". It is AGPL, you're welcome to contribute or fork it. https://github.com/diaspora/diaspora

to be fair, its not Mastodon, its the #Fediverse. Mastodon is arguably the least rich platfrom on the 'verse. IMHO Friendica is where its at, and you can still communicate with all the twitter refugees on Mastodon, as well as meater content on services likeDiaspora*, not to mention full integration with Lemmy (which works fairly similar to Reddit) while Masto you can see lemmy posts and replies without having to leave your preferred application or webpage, but you can only reply, you can post your own from a Mastodon account.

Tim Weeney is Finally switching to Linux!
I think that is what Diaspora aimed for. Although they made it WAY too complicated. Hasn't even reached a million active accounts.

Elon Musk orders software programmers to Twitter HQ within 3 hours
Diaspora* has never been more appropriately named.
- Social Media Is Dead: What we call social media networks are anything but. Now that they're beginning to unravel, we should ask what it would take to create social media for people, not advertisers.

Towards End-to-End Encryption for Direct Messages in the Fediverse (tangentially related to Mastodon)
I don't have a lot of confidence in the work that is currently being done. The developers who are excellent at building federated systems typically aren't cryptographers. For example. Another issue.

Celebrities are starting to leave Twitter. Here's a running list.
ActivityPub is a decentralized social network used by Mastodon, which resembles an older version of Twitter, as well as Pixelfed, which resembles older Instagram, Friendica, which resembles older Facebook, and others.

Confused beginner question on mirroring
Mastodon might be the wrong thing for you here, as it's more akin to Twitter. For Instagram you're better off with Pixelfed, for Facebook it would be Friendica. The advantage is that all of these can still talk to each other.

Will Europe Force a Facebook Blackout?
AFAIK Friendica is closer to Facebook in function, with different community groups and such. It's part of the Fediverse too so kinda compatible with Mastodon. I haven't tried it though. Someone recommend a server?

Our own social media
After what happened, I think it's the time to craft our own little social media. Decentralized social media. I'm not talking about Facebook, Twitter or even Reddit. I'm talking about social media like Mastodon, Pleroma and Friendica. What we need is work together actually. Some of us co-op by give time to host and maintain the VPS or dedicated server, others maybe help by moderate it and others help by donations or share.
What are some alternatives?
