Marcel
Very lightweight daemon to publish figures to a MQTT broker (1wire data as temperatures, ISP real time consumption, UPS figures, meteo forecast, ...), check subscribted topics and alerts if out of range or missing. Custom decision scripts can be created in Lua. (by destroyedlolo)
Tasmota
Alternative firmware for ESP8266 and ESP32 based devices with easy configuration using webUI, OTA updates, automation using timers or rules, expandability and entirely local control over MQTT, HTTP, Serial or KNX. Full documentation at (by arendst)

Modbus TCP anyone and for which kind of usage
I created a daemon that is bridging various protocols I'm using for my automation to MQTT (1-wire, RFXTRX, and some low level reading) : https://github.com/destroyedlolo/Marcel

How I wrote my own Smart Home Software using Lua
Everything is built around MQTT messaging and I got several daemons picking, processing and submitting information. - https://github.com/destroyedlolo/Marcel is in charge of low level interface with my 1-wire network, get weather forecast, ISP figures ... Lua user script are doing simple processing and validate data if needed - https://github.com/destroyedlolo/Majordome is the root of the automation. Lua user scripts are launch based on received even and implement the automation. Initially, it was fully a Lua application, but separating the low level (C++) and user part (Lua) makes the code more easily manageable, and simply everything. - https://github.com/destroyedlolo/Selene is a framework helpers to Lua. Thanks to its pluggins, it add some capabilities to Lua to generate graphical or textual interface ... and much more like data management, multi-threading (real threading, not only co-routine that wasn't enough for such massive event driven dashboard).

Somfy devices not controllable in Google Home
I created one of them : Marcel (among other stuffs it can do). But it is very geeky oriented tool as needed manual compilation (nothing very complicated, only the procedure needs to be followed ... but repulsive for those who are used to windows and ready-made stuff).

Patio Door Automation
Yes, I did that using a 1-wire DIY captor + homemade daemon.

Printing emails based on Message Filters, does not seem possible
All of my office devices are connected to Sonoff S31 smart plugs, flashed with Tasmota on their own locked-down VLAN, and can be controlled via voice, Alexa, Tasker automation on my Android, NFC tags at my office door and various scripts triggered via my StreamDeck (on Linux). This all works fantastic, and I can turn on or off my devices, including my printer, when I start or end my day at work.

Ask HN: I’m an FCC Commissioner proposing regulation of IoT security updates
The best alternative firmware example for true IOT devices is Tasmota [1]. Erase manufacturer firmware for every ESP devices the day after purchase to avoid those careless manufacturer firmwares.

Sonoff smart plugs
The ESP8266 based Sonoff S31 and ESP32 based Switchbot plugs, both flashed with either Tasmota or ESPHome, are my go-to options for US WiFi smart plugs with power monitoring.

And if you want to turn your ESP8266 into a standalone appliance, with a web interface and directly editable config that doesn't need a build step, Tasmota is another great option.
