dayjs VS axios

As web developers, we heavily rely OSS packages. One popular example is Day.js, a JS lib for parsing, validating, manipulating, and formatting dates. It's a widely-used alternative to Moment, with over 17mil weekly downloads on npm.

A critical bug was discovered in Day.js (see: https://github.com/iamkun/dayjs/pull/2118) causing incorrect date manipulation (add, subtract) when in UTC TZ. This could have severe implications for any project relying on Day.js for date-related functionality. However, the maintainer of the project appears to be unresponsive, leaving the bug unresolved and the future of the library uncertain.

This raises some important questions for our community:

- At what point should we consider a widely-used OSS project "abandoned" if the maintainer is unresponsive?

- Is forking the project the best solution, or should we first try to reach out to the maintainer through other channels?

- Are there established community guidelines around responsiveness expectations for widely-used OSS projects?

- What are successful examples of community-driven forks or maintenance after a maintainer stepped away?

I am very aware that many of these developers give their spare time for free for these projects, with little or no payment, and I am very thankful for all their work. This developer does get some money (a small amount?) through OpenCollective, and possibly also works for a company (in China?) that makes a UI library, which I think uses Day.js internally.

Date.js

We have to install refine's support packages for React Table and React Hook Form. We are using Tailwind Heroicons for our icons, the Day.js library for time calculations and Recharts library to plot our charts for KPI data. So, run the following and we are good to go:

well, I haven't reviewed the code, I just checked package.json and I'll suggest you to ditch moment.js Even the creator recommends ditching it. dayjs is a fantastic alternative.

Note, you can use any library for HTTP requests like axios. This example uses the http and node-fetch libraries available on npm.

For this article, I will be using the TypeScript Starter template as shown in the screenshot above. This comes with Nodejs, Cheerio, Axios

Axios is a popular HTTP client library for Node.js that provides a more user-friendly and feature-rich way to make HTTP requests. Axios simplifies error handling and supports features like automatic JSON parsing and request/response interceptors, making it a great choice for many HTTP request scenarios.

For this tutorial, we’re going to scan the file for malware using Verisys Antivirus API, and so we’ll add a package to make it easier to make external HTTP requests. Popular choices include Axios and node-fetch - for this article, we’ll use node-fetch

In the dynamic realm of JavaScript and front-end development, selecting the appropriate tool for HTTP requests is critical. Axios and Fetch stand out as two leading contenders, each offering distinct features and benefits. Once you start to handle all the corner-cases of the fetch, you will find that you don't want to repeat the boilerplate each time you call network, so you will write some wrapper around the fetch or use redaxios library from Jason Miller, which provides axios-like API on top of fetch so it weights only 800 bytes, which is nice. But then you might need the axios interceptors which redaxios do not implement and if your application upload files and you want to track the upload progress with ProgressEvent, the fetch does not support that, only XMLHttpRequest does, on which the original axios is based. And after you write all your custom wrappers around fetch and upload wrappers around XMLHttpRequest, you might reconcider the original statement, that axios library is obsoleted.

Overall, there are a few back-and-forth requests between server and client, and in Remix this can be handled in a few different ways, either using native Forms or by using Remix's useFetcher hooks, or just with normal http ajax requests like Fetch, Axios or the O.G XMLHTTPRequest.

So let's first install the axios npm library, so we can make an API call using it.
