I updated the punks gem / library to add generation of Matt & John's® ye olde punk v1/v2 anno 2017 style. The new built-in spritesheet (that is, punks_2017-24x24.png) uses the 133 images (in 24px), meta data attribute names and index order from the public permissionless blockchain contract for guaranteed 100% pixel-perfect copies (or is that originals?).

Best Practices for adding a background and creating metadata for the attributes?
About meta data - I recommend generating the collection from a rarity & popularity attribute dataset (in the .comma-separated values format) in the first place. See punks.starter for some samples.
