First thing you want to get set up is a Lua debugger. I'm way out of date. But, back when I was using Lua in my games heavily, literally the only debugger that wasn't a huge PITA to use was https://unknownworlds.com/decoda/ https://github.com/unknownworlds/decoda That's a long dead project. But, the way it injects debugging capability into your executable with no change at all to your code/libraries/binary is magic.
