I started using it as a bit of a joke but I actually really liked it - visually distinct, easy to read and works well at small and larger sizes.

I didn't know that until now. I just looked it up on Github (Comic-Mono-Font) it actually looks pretty nice, and the fact that it's programmatically generated from Comic Sans using a Python script is crazy.

Recently I discovered Recursive font (https://github.com/arrowtype/recursive), I like the work behind this. I have been using this, and finally see it as my final settlement. You can even customize the font to your needs: https://github.com/arrowtype/recursive-code-config

- I have one OFL font with a few variable axes, Recursive, made for Google Fonts – but it isn’t really a neo-grotesque like you are seeking (but still can be fun for web design and dev!)

https://github.com/arrowtype/recursive/blob/main/OFL.txt says it is the most common open source font license, and allows even commercial use. It can definitely be shipped by distros. I use it from AUR though.
