Connect to internet
Browservice - proxy but goes one step further and renders the page and actually only sends back a clickable image to the browser on the old machine. Almost like screensharing.

The Home Dialup ISP: Bell 103 through V.92 with automatic call recording
I have a [Browservice](https://github.com/ttalvitie/browservice) server set up for the faster machines, which basically streams images, and a [retroproxy](https://github.com/humbertocsjr/retroproxy) service for the slower machines :)

If you're happy with OpenBSD, probably any computer is good enough
"browservice" will render web pages server-side and then deliver them to your browser as an image with simple javascript.
It works in virtually all "old" browsers and can be very useful for older computers.

Only thing I'm sad about is I cannot view r/windows98 on my Win98..
There's also Browservice.
TL;DR: Read the entirety of Readme.md (it's at the bottom of https://github.com/ttalvitie/browservice). If you still have specific questions, i'll try to help.

would my laptop be faster on Linux?
Boy do I have the ultimate cheat for you: Browservice
- Tiny Core Linux 13.0 is a full Linux desktop in 22 MB

Downgraded to Windows 10. and I lost everything. But, I definitely don't regret it.
I have one too but for playing good old games :) dual booting with Win98 for some older games too. I usually browse there using the Browservice, it works good enough for me. https://github.com/ttalvitie/browservice

Can Anybody Help Me Figure Out What It Means To Set Up A Proxy To View HTTPS Sites With WIndows 98?
You can try out Browservice. I run it on a raspberry pi but it now has a Windows version as well. I just plugged it into my network and leave it run on the pi. It’s not terribly complicated but I could try to help. https://github.com/ttalvitie/browservice

16 bit Netscape Navigator for Windows 3.1 still can browse the web
Check out WeBone - https://github.com/atauenis/webone - a proxy to make the modern Web somewhat more digestible to old browsers.

Any way to read Reddit on emulated classic Mac?
Now this is interesting. If the OP has a more modern computer (or even a Raspberry PI) he can use WebONE HTTP Proxy

MASTODON WE COME!
Some nerdy details:The open source app is written in MacPython 1.5.2. In order to run it there's a bunch of tinkering required. You need to enable Open Transport Networking (Apple Extras - Network Software selector). You will also need Internet Config 1.4. In there you have to play a bit around with the DNS-settings for it to actually find anything. Furthermore you need to host a WebOne HTML proxy on a modern machine to bypass the SSL-requirement of Mastodon. The latter can be assigned globally in the Internet Config too. To sign in into your Mastodon instance you also may need something like iCap which worked for me to complete the sign in process.Expect to do some troubleshooting (since nothing will work haha) or maybe don't do it altogether since OS 7 is everything but a piece of software you want to connect to the internet.

My Favourite Computer, an Old Mac
I’ve got the Mac hooked up via an esp8266 running a SLIP server. Most of what I do on it web wise is through Gopher, it’s just the best overall solution for a computer of that age imo.
Things like HNGopher and 68k.news are great, those kinds of services make it very usable even in the modern world. I had no idea lynx ever had a 68k release, but I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised.
I have an HTTP proxy setup[1] which will downgrade https to http so that Netscape on the Mac can load sites, if for some reason I need to do so.
Thanks again for the links. Someday I’d like to get a version of my site on gopher too.

Which internet-connected apps can you still get some good value outta?
As for other options, what I know of at least, for surfing the modern web, things like WRP and WebOne can help make it more smooth, though with some caveats.

Best way to use the internet on Windows 98?
WebOne is a great vintage web proxy for this particular era of computer. It does a pretty decent job keeping websites looking “good” and transcodes multimedia contents as well.
- BeOS 3.1: After 24 years, I finally get to try the PPC version
