For the past few years I've just used the standard StevenBlack one that is enabled by default when you setup PiHole, and it covers the large majority of ads. The only ads I still see are on YouTube and Twitch, and as far as I know those can't be blocked with a DNS sinkhole since the ads are served from the same domain as the content. The lists on that site seem like they let you block a bunch of other stuff, not necessarily ads, but domains related to gambling, crypto, TikTok etc. That's a bit different.

There are lots of great sources for block lists. I used some site a long time ago that helped you build a custom list. I cant find the link but still lots of good sources like : https://github.com/blocklistproject/Lists

but the list got so long it was unmaintainable and even a REGEX stack struggled to split it from the actual video servers and led to programs being created to try to manage the mess (e.g. this closed one had 9000+ entries).

This did solve the problem. I found this and after applying that i'm not getting any pre-video ads at least, but banner ads still show up.

I don't know how to add it to ControlD but pasting https://github.com/Ewpratten/youtube_ad_blocklist/blob/master/blocklist.txt into my browser filter lists does seem to block Youtube ads quite well.

Alternately, using YouTube in a browser with the oisd blocklist and this dedicated youtube ads blocklist should block most ads, but it won’t be reliable.
