I hate CSS: how can I build UIs?
Agreed, find a class-less framework to start, so that you focus on just the HTML, semantic structure first. Here's a couple of lists of such frameworks:
https://github.com/troxler/awesome-css-frameworks#class-less
https://github.com/dohliam/dropin-minimal-css
Personally, I like simple.css (https://github.com/kevquirk/simple.css)

Suggest minimal CSS framework
I need a minimal CSS framework to use as a basis to extend for a new project. I hate bloated CSS frameworks like Bootstrap and Tailwind. My ideal CSS framework would have SCSS components, well thought defaults to deal with different device sized, a decent user-base, a pre-made darkmode and less than 20KB when minimized. I saw a list of css frameworks here, but none have all my criteria. So appreciate your suggestions.

Elixir for Cynical Curmudgeons
No style attributes. You just use HTML markup and use a classless CSS framework to take care of making it look nice. My favorite is Marx, but there are others you can find here: https://github.com/dbohdan/classless-css
Water.css, MVP.css, sakura, and Tacit are among the most popular.

I wish people would stop insisting that Git branches are nothing but refs
Literally as easy as:

And before you say I should do that myself, again, if you want your work to be comfortable to read for the world, the bare minimum involves legibility.

The Future (and the Past) of the Web Is Server Side Rendering
Not op but classless CSS frameworks are awesome. The idea is to keep it simple and use the appropriate HTML tags where there were generally meant to go, and the framework will theme the page to improve usability and add flair. I've developed some great little sites with no classes at all!
Obviously this approach has its limits, but it works well for proof-of-concept sites or sites that don't need to be very complex or dynamic. Just a sensible font size, nicer looking form elements, etc.
Here is a list of classless CSS frameworks: https://github.com/dbohdan/classless-css

Using Nanoc, a Static Site Generator
Create a folder inside /output called assets. Move the stylesheet.css inside. You can also use an external css like bootstrap, or use a single file css. There is even a css based on Nier!

Ask HN: What's is your go to toolset for simple front end development?
There's a ton of very simple "minimalist" or "classless" or "markdown" [0] CSS files that you can apply to plain HTML to get modest good looks versus browser default styles these days. No changes to your markup, just use that raw HTML you are already comfortable with and LINK tag in a single CSS file.
This seems like a very good list with lots of handy easy to compare preview screenshots: https://github.com/dbohdan/classless-css
[0] From that idea that sometimes you just want to take a Markdown document's boring raw HTML output straight out of the processor without any other templating in between.

What's the canonical way to style an app in Elm?
Through the years, I have used Bootstrap together with SCSS and regular classes inside Elm. The other option I used is elm-css. With elm-css I have also had two approaches, one that builds a bunch of style libraries containing style snippets that get used in the apps. The second approach is something similar to classless approach (see this collection for more examples)
What are some alternatives?
