apollo-server VS TypeORM

Another interesting point is that executing fetches on the server can allow developers to more easily leverage caching. Next.js already handles caching out-of-the-box and I’m curious to see if the wider adoption of RSC reduces the need to combine React with solutions like Apollo Server and Apollo Client. While there are other benefits to these tools, RSC could provide similar caching behavior without the need to invest in a GraphQL solution.

There are several GraphQL server implementations, however, for this tutorial, we'll utilize Apollo GraphQL's Apollo Server, a lightweight and flexible JavaScript server that makes it easy to build GraphQL APIs.

While working on this blog post, I learned that Apollo Server, the most popular GraphQL server for typescript, uses a similar method for adding error codes to GraphQL. It even lets you add custom errors. Hopefully, someday other GraphQL server projects will follow them. Until then, we’ve got a strong indication we took the right approach.

GraphQL is just a schema, there are many different implementations of a GraphQL server, AppSync being one of them. I mentioned Apollo server in this series as well.

After some head-scratching, I opened an issue on Apollo Server’s GitHub repository. There, Apollo Server contributor @​glasser shared a helpful suggestion: why not invoke our AuthPlugin from Apollo Server’s context function? Throwing from context would ensure we can control the HTTP status response without having to introduce more methods and error checks to our AuthPlugin (like unexpectedErrorProcessingRequest). With that suggestion in mind, we rewrote our AuthPlugin as follows:

Lastly, instead of writing our API core ourselves, we'll be using the star of this episode --- Apollo Server (a.k.a. GraphQL server). It has detailed documentation available here.

If you use Sequalize, TypeORM or for MongoDB, we have Mongoose these types of ORM tools, then you are safe by default because these help us against the SQL query injection attacks by default.

We decided to use MySQL for a database. and TypeOrm for ORM. The ER diagram is provided below. For example, the task_assignments table holds information about user assignments to tasks. How does this compare to using directly an ORM lib that supports browser like TypeORM [0] via SQL.js [1]?

After all of that work, I finally was able to use Deno in my project. It was really cool! Unfortunately, both VS Code and IntelliJ with Deno are essentially unusable [3]. Or, at least, unacceptably slow compared to what I had with NodeJS.

TypeORM is a very convenient ORM for JS apps. We use it with NestJS and running it on NodeJS.

We are going to start using TypeORM as an ORM to help us interact with Postgres, but we also have an example of using Prisma in the future and everything that we have to adapt to switch the ORMs if necessary. At the end we are implementing neon.tech as a production database, right? 😉

ᴬ typeorm officially supports mssql@v9, but the support for the custom stream builder was added in mssql@v10. Since mssql is a peer dependency of typeorm, you can force override it and use the Cloud SQL Connector with typeorm. There is an open PR to add support for mssql@v10 in typeorm.
