    4.0 dev also has a new feature (clip children) that ishould be useful for better+easier polygonal art, but it's also broken (has some issue with backbuffer that makes it render oddly, there's a 1-line improper fix for that but color still blends improperly). Here's an example of the partial-improper-fix version (that also shows a different clip issue as well with control nodes):

    I really hope someone looks at #49198 soon before there is an official alpha release. 2D Clipping and Masking is such a vital core 2D feature, and it has been broken ever since it was implemented.

    This should be fixed in 3.5 when using the GLES3 renderer thanks to shader caching :)

    Godot is the open-source equivalent, and for 2D is absolutely the best engine I've used out of the UE, Unity and Godot. 3D is having big improvements coming in 4.0. Worth checking out: https://godotengine.org/ https://github.com/godotengine/godot

    I think you'd have a good time with Godot. While not necessarily being different, it avoids expensive licenses because it's FOSS (Free and Open Source Software). They have their own scripting language GDScript or you could download their Mono version and use C# instead. While being low on tutorials currently, the content of those tutorials are really good. Garbaj's Tutorial Playlist and GDQuest's content are good material to watch for learning Godot.

    I would also like to take a moment to recommend the Godot Engine. It's open source, completely free, a very lightweight app, and its native language is very similar to Python. The community is smaller than the Unity or Unreal communities, but it's very active and there are lots of learning resources available.
