JDK 21 Release Notes
Some options for those who prefer to avoid the Oracle minefield:
https://adoptium.net
https://aws.amazon.com/corretto
https://www.azul.com/downloads
https://bell-sw.com/pages/downloads
Sadly, no-one has managed to package it yet, but we should get something in the next couple of days. Since 21 is an "LTS" release, major Linux distributions will provide a runtime pretty soon. Ubuntu backports them to old releases too.

Few general questions from hopefully Java beginner-to-be?
You can totally use VSCode. It's Java support is quite good (it really uses Eclipse under the hood basically). You can compile Java code by hand if you install the Java Development Kit. You can also use a build tool to help you. Maven is the most used one. It has a bit of a learning curve but makes using libraries a lot easier.

UV has a killer feature you should know about
I swear I'm not trolling: what do you not like about modern golang's dep management (e.g. go.mod and go.sum)?
I agree that the old days of "there are 15 dep managers, good luck" was high chaos. And those who do cutesy shit like using "replace" in their go.mod[1] is sus but as far as dx $(go get) that caches by default in $XDG_CACHE_DIR and uses $GOPROXY I think is great

Terraform Cookbook: Development Environment Recipe
It's time to grab our most essential infrastructure cooking utensil, our pan: the terraform CLI. This is the workhorse of our infrastructure kitchen β the pan we'll use to cook up all our infrastructure recipes. We'll use tenv to fetch and install the perfect pan for the job. If you wish, use Opentofu, which is an "more open" source altenative.

S3 native state locking in Terraform
These changes made it possible to start work on state locking without DynamoDB, which doesn't require any additional resources, apart from the bucket itself. After a couple of months, S3 native state locking was introduced in Terraform 1.10.0 in November 2024 While similar discussion exists in OpenTofu repo since September 2023, at the time of writing this article, there was no equivalent solution developed. But I hope it will be created in the coming months.

AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) vs. Terraform
Note: New versions of Terraform are placed under the BUSL license, but everything created before version 1.5.x stays open-source. OpenTofu is an open-source version of Terraform that expands on Terraform's existing concepts and offerings. It is a viable alternative to HashiCorp's Terraform, being forked from Terraform version 1.5.6.

What is Configuration Drift?
Similarly, on the infrastructure provisioning side, IaC tools - which are usually declarative - are a great fit for observing and managing drifts. Tools such as OpenTofu, Hashicorp Terraform, or AWS CloudFormation use declarative templates to define the environment's state. This provides the option to detect drift by comparing the current state of resources to the defined infrastructure in the code.

From License to Freedom: Embracing Open Source Forks Knowing What to Expect
OpenTofu, (forked from Hashicorp Terraform), is a newer example along with OpenBao (forked from Hashicorp Vault). When HashiCorp changed the license for Terraform and Vault to the Business Source License (BSL), the community quickly responded by forking the project under the name OpenTofu & OpenBao. These forks aim to preserve the toolβs open nature and ensure that the developer community has a truly open source alternative to some of the industries widely adapted softwares.

OpenTofu is a fork of Terraform, aimed to remain open-source and the changelog is driven by the community.

Crossplane vs Terraform
Terraform has great community support, but it feels like it is declining due to its licensing change to BSL (luckily, OpenTofu is here). Crossplane has a much smaller community, but it seems to be rising, especially because it is under the CNCF umbrella with an Apache License 2.0.
